July THIRD ... North America's REAL birthday!! 400

Jul 02, 2008 23:09

.
Tomorrow (July 3) is our 400th birthday. Nah, I don't mean yesterday, July 1st, when Canada celebrated its 141 birthday, or even you American upstarts who celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, a mere adolescent of 232 years.

No - I mean JULY the THIRD - when Québec City was founded 400 years ago by Samuel de Champlain. Tomorrow, Québec City has its 400 birthday and a gigantic party will be held throughout Upper Town, Lower Town and the Plains of Abraham. I am one 'vrai fils de Québec' who wishes he was there - but I'll toast my homeland with some bière et vin to wash down the tourtière, poutine and tarte-aux-sucres. There will be the usual arguments and bitching between English/French, Canada/Québec, First Nations/Europeans ... but by sundown, after good food and many beers, the celebration will be a happy one.
