"You say you wanna be free, so I'm letting you fly, but I know in my heart babe that our love will never die."
"So thats it. You're just going to let him go? You're not even gonna try to change his mind?" Micael Johns tried to reason with his best friend. "Damn, Cook, you had me thinking you really loved the kid." The aussie said between sips of a beer that was probably far too strong for someone who was struggling to convince his wife that he wasn't an alcoholic to be drinking this early on a Thursday evening.
"Well I mean you know as well as I do that I can't.. that I can't just make him come back to me." David's words were as light as any other casual Thursday night chatter that might have been spewed by the person who was arguably the most popular idol hopeful. Whatever that means. They were not the words of someone who just had the most beautiful thing in his life taken from him--though in his mind temporarily-- just a half hour before. "I mean, if I could, I wouldn't be sitting here with you right now. Thats for sure."
"Thats....so touching, David." Michael said, creating corny, false tears.
"I try." after letting out a small chuckle at the man sittting to his left. "He said..He said that I see a 'sugar coated' version of him.. I don't even know what that means."
"Well, mate. I'm sure you'd love to see him coated in sugar."
"Well...." It wasn't far from the truth. And that was why Michael was his best friend. David laughed to himself as 'pour some sugar on me' played in his mind.
"But honestly, you know.."David's tone changed. His words became weighted. He was serious now. "Castro's totally-- Jason, I mean.. I just.. I don't know what it is, but I really believe that if I give him some space for a while, that he'll come around. I dunno..its just what we had, what I gave him....that shit is real. You can't kill that." He turned to face his friend and was greeted by a look that was party sympathetic, but mostly amused by David's choice of words, then decided that staring down into his half-empty bottle of beer was probably the better thing to do.
" 'What you gave him?' Spoken just like the David Cook that the entire country has grown to know and love." he said with the signature michael John's grin appearing at the corner of his mouth. He took another sip.
"Self indulgent prick?"
"Yeah, pretty much."

Back at the flat a la Cook and Castro, America's favorite dreadhead sat in silence mulling things over in his brain. Jason knew in his mind that the decision he made to end things with David was the the right thing to do. But even though his head knew it, his stomach didn't want to have anything to do with the new change of plans. He felt sick. Where was the stomach of the laid back, happy-go-lucky-notta-care-in-the-world Jason Castro? Because this guilty-nervous-unsureofhimself Jason Castro stomach kinda sucked. The former type of Jason would just go back to being friends with David Cook. Like how they were before David had first kissed his face. The latter type of Jason was considering taking it back. Taking everything he said about them being done back. Taking David back. Pressing stop.rewind.play. He knew his roommate wouldn't mind his change of heart. Change of heart? Was that what it was? In an hour and a half's time Jason had gone from pretty damn sure to wavering to downright confused.
After putting his best into an epic battle against his better judgement, Jason came to a conclusion about the thoughts and emotions that were raging inside of him. But he wasn't sure just yet that his mind agreed with that conclusion, therefore he decided to ignore it and find something to do. His mind strayed to video games. Xbox. David's room. Pass. If Jason was unable to decide for himself how to occupy his mind, he had lots of people in his life who had impeccable timing as to when to do such a thing for him. A short buzz and a then a long buzz and another short buzz making thudding noises from the dresser that on the other side of the boy's bedroom gave Jason just the excuse he needed to stifle the thoughts that were spiraling around in his brain.
Jason optmistically jumped up from his unmade bed to go see who was on the other end of the phone that was yelling at him to get off his ass and press talk.
"Halloooo." Jason said in his very cheerful Jasony-type-Jason voice.
"Jase, you'll never believe whats going on around here." The voice of his younger brother Michael assaulted his ears from the other side. Michael was Jason's best friend. He missed him.
"I don't know if you can top any of the exciting things that happening to me right now, but shoot." Jason was ready to listen to what his brother had to say. His own predicament wasn't very exciting to him at the moment.
"Well...its about Mandy." Michael's voice was hesitant.
"What could she possibly want? I mean we broke up six months ago and....oh. does she want..?" Jason's ex-girlfriend was a great gal. And in her defense, no one really knew that Jason wasn't exactly sitting in the straight tree these days except for those immeadiately involved...and well... the rest of the Idol cast. By the inflexion in Michael's words he knew that that was exactly what she wanted. What was he going to do? Tell her he was gay? Ditch David altogether for a pretty girl back home? Why did she want him now? He needed to be working on his song. He needed to be doing other American Idol related things. He didn't need boyfriend and now girlfriend issues. rawr.
"Nah, Jase. Thats not it. She's...she's fine with everything. and well...its just..."Before Jason had a chance to hear what his brother had to say someone had snuck up on him and taken the phone right out of his hand, pressed the 'end' button and threw it on the ground.
"David..."Jason turned to looked up into the eyes of the man who had just snuck into his bedroom."I...uhh.. when did you?...I didn't even hear you come in."
"I'm sorry for interrupting what was probably a very stimulating conversation."
"Nah, It was just...ah....nevermind...How's MJ?"
"Michael Johns is fine. his Wife is fine. his Hair is fine. his car very very fine. Its a nice ride for a guy who only placed 8th. How are you doing, Jase?"
"I uhh.." speak words Castro. "I take it back. Everything. Just forget all of it. I think all I really want is to be with you david." Jason didn't know where his words were coming from. But frankly, he didn't care. The look that was spreading across David's face was enough to remind him of what made him fall for him in the first place. Jason wrapped his arms around the older man's waste and laid his head lovingly on his chest. "David, the song I'm doing tomorrow...It was originally for you..but uh. I guess its irrelevant now. I should probably call my brother back"
"Weird. Because my song was for you too. And now its more relevant than ever. You can call him back later can't you?" David laid an affectionate kiss right on his lovers slightly agape lips. pulled away slightly, then engaged him in another kiss that redefined the words 'deep' and 'passionate.'
"Yeah, I think that would be okay." Jason smiled into both kisses.

As Michael Johns pulled into the driveway of his California home, he felt a buzz from his pocket. When the car was parked he pulled out his phone to read a text message from his best friend.
"I told you so. Or maybe you told me so. regardless. Jason loves me. He says hi."
"Well that didn't take very long...."Michael looked at the car's clock. "2 hours. nice."
