Title: The Warmth (1/?)
Pairing: Jason Castro/ David Cook
Rating: Pg- 13 for language.
Word Count: 1, 939
Summary: This is just the beginning.
Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own Jason Castro or David Cook.
A/N: This is my first fan fiction EVER. I used to read them like crazy, but have never ever even attempted to write one. So please keep that in mind. Ahaha. Just so that everything makes sense- the italicized part is a flashback sorta thing. Please give me any constructive criticism that you have. I would really like all of your guys' honest opinions. Well, without further adieu:
Sometimes we don’t realize how much certain people and certain situations can change us. He always said that he didn’t change anything about himself going into the competition. But the truth is, he felt like the person he was, was changing- because of the competition. And to tell you the truth, it was a little embarrassing. Who really takes American Idol seriously? Well, besides the forty-year old women who get their panties in a bunch over the contestants: no one. But, he was starting to take it really seriously. Not only was he starting to take the competition seriously, he was starting to take his relationship with the other contestants seriously. Although some of them could be highly annoying, such as Fetus Enchilada and Cryesha, he had begun to develop some very close bonds with others. One of those people he had begun to grow extremely close to was David Cook. The rock star with a heart of gold. It all started when they became roommates during the first week of the competition.

Jason walked up to the apartment building slightly giddy. He was really excited for this new journey in his life to begin. He was also kind of nervous too. He had a hard time expressing himself verbally (despite getting a 1340 on the SAT) and wondered how he would get along with everyone else. He wondered if his roommates were going to be cool. He wondered if they were going to be better singers than him. Most importantly though, he wondered when he was going to be able to take a nap. He went up to door of the apartment that he was assigned and unlocked it.
“Here goes nothin’” he sighed aloud.
Upon entering the apartment he realized that he was the first to arrive. He wheeled his suitcase into the middle of the living room and put his guitar case next to it, he then plopped down on the very comfortable looking couch in front of him. Before he knew it, he was drifting off to la-la land.
While Jason was dozing on the couch, two other people entered the apartment. The first man, Michael, was a tall brown-haired Australian man, clad in a loose fitting tee shirt and jeans. The second man, David, was a little more eccentric to say the least. He sported a faux-hawk with red bangs and a goatee, which complemented his sweater vest and faded jeans…nicely?
“How sweet is this pad, mate?” asked Michael after opening the door.
“It’s pretty swee- look there’s already someone here,” replied emo-haired David, while pointing to the sleeping figure on the couch.
“We’re rooming with a girl?! I thought that wasn’t allowed!” exclaimed the Aussie with a big grin on his face.
David studied the sleeping figure a little bit more closely, “Shut up man!” he stated as he rolled his eyes at Michael. “ That’s not a girl- it’s that one guy from auditions- you know the one hippy guy with the dreads?”
Michael’s eye’s lit up as soon as he heard the words “hippy” and “dreads”. "Ohhh yeah, I remember him. You think he’ll be down to smoke a ‘J’ with his new flat mates?”
Once again David rolled his eyes at Michael, “You’re starting that shit already Michael? We just got here.”
“Come on mate. We gotta break in this new pad with a nice smoke sesh” was Michael’s reply.
David just laughed at his new friend and then decided they should stop being so annoying when someone was trying to sleep. “You’re ridiculous. Let’s go look around and let the poor kid sleep.” David’s eyes looked over the young man’s figure once more before grabbing Michael by the arm and pulling him into one of the other rooms.
Jason woke to the sound of dishes clanking and water running. The latter made him have to pee a little. He was a little discombobulated as he sat up and wiped the drool of his cheek and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. After fully coming into consciousness and realizing where he was, Jason concluded that the clanking dishes and running water meant that his roommates had arrived. He got up from the couch, almost tripping over his suitcase, and made his way towards the kitchen. The sight that greeted him in the kitchen was not really what he expected, but he decided to just go with it.
“Nice outfit” Jason said, “Do you cook in that often?”
David who was making himself and Michael dinner, hadn’t realized that the younger man was awake. So when he heard a voice behind him, he jumped about ten feet into the air.
“You scared the shit out of me man!” yelped David.
Jason couldn’t help but laugh. He hadn’t meant to scare the guy, but it was pretty funny seeing him jump like that.“Sorry” he replied with a stupid grin on his face.
“Agghh, you about gave me a heart attack!” David said.
Jason was staring at the scene before him and just started laughing again, “Sorry guy, but what ARE you wearing?” Jason asked
“Oh you mean this?” David asked doing a little shimmy “This is my cooking outfit.” David Cook was dressed in nothing but blue and yellow polka-dotted boxers and a pink apron with the phrase Kiss the Cook on it.
Jason just stared back at the other man as if he were insane. “I’ve seem some weird stuff in my time, but I think this might be up there on the top five list” said Jason, eyes still wide.
“Lemme explain, kid.” Replied David. “I only wear the boxers because when I’m using so much open flame, it gets hotter than hell in the kitchen. And I wear the apron to protect my tender skin from being singed”
Jason was trying to hold his laughter in as much as possible. Was this guy for real? “And why did you choose the pink apron?” he asked with a smile plastered on his face.
“Well, if you MUST know. It was the only color they had with the phrase on it. And my name is David Cook, so of course I had to get to apron that says ‘kiss the cook’ on it” David replied smugly.
This guy really is nuts, Jason thought to himself. At least it’ll be entertaining living with him. “Well David, it’s nice to meet you. My name is Jason” he replied, extending a hand to the older man. “ And although you’re wearing that apron, don’t expect me to kiss you.”
David accepted the younger man’s hand, and chuckled at his comment. This kid is not only easy on the eyes, but he has a sense of humor too! David Cook new he was in trouble. Especially now that he had felt the smoothness of the other man’s hand.
“Well, if it isn’t sleeping beauty!” Jason heard from behind him. He turned around to see another man. Thankfully, this one was fully dressed. “What’s up?” replied Jason.
“I’ve been waiting for your ass to wake up for three hours, mate. I want to christen this flat with a nice smoke sesh.” The other man replied excitedly. “The name’s Michael John’s” he added, extending his hand to Jason.
Jason shook the other man’s hand, “Jason Castro.”
“So what do you say boys, are we ready to break in this pad the right way?” asked Michael as he pulled out a plastic bag full of brown-ish green herbs from his pocket.
David, who had been idly watching the two other men interact as he finished makong dinner, decided Michael needed a little settling down. “Michael, give it a break man.”
In reaction to David’s comment, Michael displayed a faux-sad face and looked over at Jason with puppy dog eyes. “You want to smoke with me, don’t ya Castro?”
“Actually, I don’t smoke” was Jason’s response.
“You have to be joking, mate! You have dreads. And it’s common knowledge that if you have dreadlocks, you smoke weed!” Michael practically yelled at Jason.
Jason was so used to this schpeel. The whole you have dreadlocks which means you’re a hippy which automatically means you’re a stoner. Blah blah blah. Before Jason even had time to give a response, David stepped in.
“Michael. Leave. The. Kid. Alone.” David said while giving him the evil eye. “Now I made dinner and I think we should all just eat and shut up about the topic.” He looked over at Jason and gave him a little wink.
Jason smiled back at David and mouthed the word “thanks”
“Oh fine,” replied Michael. “You are seriously a bunch of girls. This is going to be the most boring apartment EVER. Let’s eat.
Jason just laughed at this guy. Someone was a little melodramatic. He couldn’t help but realize that David had stood up for him twice in less than ten minutes. He could tell that David was going to become a close friend.
**************
David and Jason had become continually closer throughout the course of the season. They had bonded over their ridiculous hair. (But Jason preferred David’s new and improved hair to that emo-mess he had when he had first arrived and David loved Jason’s locks of dread.) They bonded over music and television and girls. They bonded over their hate for Simon, their speculation that Paula was on some good shit, and their total lack of concern for Randy. The fact of the matter is, they were very good friends. But to Jason, the relationship he had with David didn’t feel like the same type of relationship he had with his other friends. It felt different somehow; more complex.
David watched the younger man sitting across from him in the lounge. He could tell that Jason was thinking hard about something. He noticed the glossed over look in his eyes and the way his face was all scrunched up. Honestly, David noticed everything about Jason. Like how his eyes were the color of the ocean on a perfect day at the beach, or how his hands were long and slender, but still masculine, or how he always wore pants that complemented his ass amazingly. David realized where his mind was taking him and had to slam on the breaks. Those thoughts can get you in a lot of trouble. The thing is, David had it bad for Jason. Really bad. Every since the first day he saw the boy sleeping on the couch of their apartment. And this thing he had for Jason was getting worse by the day. He had to force himself with all his might sometimes to not just pin the younger man to the wall and have his way with him. But this was more than just sexual attraction. The kid was smart as all hell. And he was sweet. And he was funny. And he walked around all day in a robe! Sometimes David thought Jason felt the same way about him, but he wasn’t sure. They had been living together for six weeks now, and they had grown very close. David didn’t know what to do. He wanted to just walk up to Jason and lay one on him, but his was afraid of rejection. Afraid of ruining their friendship. But, what was life if you didn’t take chances? He looked up at the beautiful boy again and felt goosebumps form all over his body. He needed to tell Jason how he felt.
Jason was drawn out of his thoughts by David’s voice.
“Hey Jase?”
“What’s up David?” he replied, looking up at the older man.
“I really need to tell you something…”
