Cupcakes!

Becca and the rest of the fifth graders had a mock election for a social studies unit. They all had to run for office, which included making posters and speeches. Becca ran for "delegate," and actually ended up winning one of six delegate positions. One of her campaign promises was a cupcake for every fifth-grader (promised with my OK). So I decided Friday was a good time for her to make good on that promise, what with the upcoming Presidential Inauguration.

So a good chunk of Thursday (when the kids had off for no snow) was spent making the cupcakes. I used four white cake mixes (I added about a tablespoon of vanilla extract to each batch to enrich the flavor), dyed half the batter blue and added red sprinkles to the other half, then layered the batters. I made buttercream frosting and topped the cupcakes with red and blue sprinkles, plus an American flag. They turned out cute, I think, and Becca said they were well-received.
