Hawaii, Big Island - Part 1 of 9

Feb 25, 2010 23:19

Hi all,

I just got back from vacation in Hawaii,  and as you might expect,  have a few photos to share.  :)

On the first day I spent time with a friend of mine,  who later in the week would go diving,  when I explored more of the big island by myself.  For the first two days we hung out,  and the following set is one of the first areas we saw.  This is on the very south part of the island,  and is the southernmost point of the United States.

In some of the rock around Hawaii there is a high concentration of Ovaline,  which is green in color.  As this rock erodes and turns to sand,  you get green sand beaches.  It's difficult to see the color of these beaches in photos,  so don't be too surprised if this beach doesn't look green,  it was a fairly subtle shade.  Still,  I think the next images do a nice job of showing a remote beach. (we had to use a 4WD vehicle to get there)

And finally,  the wind is pretty much a constant there,  as such,  all the trees have been shaped and deformed over time.
