He really is that tall and thin in person, for the record. And it is fabulous. Also, strangely enough, I think I like the beard more in person, too. I usually really hate facial hair (and I admit to being somewhat mildly sad when it became apparent that he wasn't going to shave for the tour, because I am lame), but I ceased to notice or really think about it once he began talking. This is somewhat remarkable.
I AM TOTALLY WITH YOU 110% ON THIS. I'm one of the few people on the Internets it seems who isnt partial to the Conan beard. I too was counting on him shaving for the tour and was looking forward to seeing my presentable classy clean-shaven ginger man in person. And then he didnt shave and I was like ಠ____ಠ. But seeing it in person was a lot different... it looked normal and I forgot about it after a while. That said, I hope he decides to shave for the new show XD;;
I really liked the monologue, too. I know a lot of it was rehearsed for the tour, but the delivery never felt forced, and the whole thing was rather stripped down and intimate. It was a nice change of pace from the monologue on the Tonight Show, which were often the weakest points of the broadcast, to be quite honest.
I was nervous about the monologue for that specific reason. Monologues arent generally Conan's strong points unless he's riffing with Andy or the crowd. The format's just too stiff and conventional for him, I think. I hate to admit it but his Tonight Show monologues were often less than hilarious... I think lengthening the monologue and eliminating the second skit/gag after the first guest of the night was a bad idea since that's what people really came to know him for on Late Night. So I was happy that the tour monologue was more of a funny discussion than joke-jokes. And even though he's done this monologue a bajillion times now, you're right-- it didn't feel forced and he definitely didnt sound bored with it. His delivery is always awesome. Also, yes "intimate" is a good way to describe this ♥
Conan is at his funniest when he's ad-libbing.
He is. Some of the funniest things Ive ever seen on his show were him ad-libbing. That's how you know someone's truly funny, when they're just being themselves and they have you in stitches. I like to watch him and Andy just talk about stuff back and forth because it's always hilarious. I could literally watch an hour-long show of just that. XD
I was also trying hard not to stare at the Jumbotron screens and watch the real thing instead, even though we were seated too far back to really see his facial expressions without aid of it, frustratingly.
I KNOW RIGHT. I was like "MUST WATCH REAL THING, I CAN HAVE CONAN ON SCREEN ANYTIME" but ultimately my eyes wandered back up to the jumbotron just because I wanted to be able to see his face. =/
Sometimes the sound drowned out his vocals/playing, though, which was a little disappointing.
I felt bad, I didnt laugh at most of the songs with lyrics simply because his vocals were drowned out and I could barely understand what he was singing. =/ I'm so happy for him though that he finally got to do a rockabilly tour (well, kind of) like he's said he's always dreamt of doing. You can tell how pumped he is to get up there and play, and that's awesome.
He also played a little bit on the keyboard, which took me aback and left me a bit mindblown. I know musical knowledge is usually easily applied to more than one instrument, if you're adept at it, but still. Sexy.
I SQUEED WHEN I SAW HE WAS AT A PIANO but nothing came out because my voice was gone. 8|
OMFG THAT JUMPSUIT. I'm not even going to lie or try to be demure, it was just hot.
IKR. I keep trying to keep myself from going off on a tangent about that suit because I wish to separate myself from some... ahem... certain kinds of fans... but there's really nothing I can do at this point I guess. I wish he'd do the new show in that suit because... damn son. There's something wrong with me. A rail-thin awkwardly-built 47 year-old man in a tight pink paisley jumpsuit halfway unbuttoned to expose a chest that's been inexplicably shaved recently (lol) should NOT be that hot.

I hope he shaves for television, too. XD I was surprised at myself for not being more opposed to it as is, and I've even kind of gotten used to it.

Yeah, the monologue on TTS rarely made me laugh, most of the time (and I think it was fairly apparent that Conan didn't write a lot of the material himself). This worked a lot better for him. Maybe they'll loosen the format for the new show? It's something to hope for.

YES AND YES. Haha, an entire episode of him and Andy bantering would be great. I would contentedly watch that five times a week, I think.
I was like "MUST WATCH REAL THING, I CAN HAVE CONAN ON SCREEN ANYTIME" but ultimately my eyes wandered back up to the jumbotron just because I wanted to be able to see his face. =/
Same problem here. Closer seats would've been excellent, but you can't have your cake and eat it too, I guess. I was really jealous of the fan groupies in the front rows, but weren't we all?

It probably shouldn't be, but it is. I always feel like a narcissist when I say I like tall, gangly men, because I'm pretty tall and gangly for a female, myself - my nickname as a child was "arms, legs, and hair". XD I also find the fact that he obviously waxed to be hilarious (although I have to admit that I'm not that into chest hair, either - maybe the Freddie Mercury look failed in focus groups).
As much as I feel like a creepy weirdo, though, I can't help but wonder how other people don't at least see the appeal after things like this. XD C'mon, guys, his face isn't that funny-looking.

Yes yes and yes. While this whole fiasco with NBC was obviously NOT Conan's fault, that doesnt mean that I dont think his TS had a lot of room for improvement. At its worst it was at least amusing, but not LOL-inducing Conan fare one gets used to. I think he was too worried about being responsible for carrying on a franchise... he's used the car metaphor in interviews before, how when he first got Late Night it was like having keys to this great car that he was so sure he was going to eventually lose, and he figured he'd take it out for a joyride while he could and put a few dents in it. That kind of attitude really made it work and it's too bad because I think for TTS he kind of gingerly took the car around the block and then carefully put it back in the garage every night, if that makes sense. I realize he had tremendous respect for the TTS but unfortunately it felt like his material was unable to let loose while he was there. That's why those last several shows were so awesome, because he had that "Alright, we're gonna dick around now" attitude that was missing before. I'm really hoping this new show will be more classic Conan now that he's doing his own thing, has kind of gone back to his roots and loyal fanbase, and isn't subject to so many expectations under such scrutiny.
Goddamnit Im dissecting this far too much. Im sorry. =/
But oh shit, Conan waxing. XD;; That wouldve made an amazing remote hahaha.

You said it beautifully. From a fan perspective, I think people like us came in at a weird time - I feel like a poseur when I refer to Late Night because I watched it a total of two or three times when it actually aired (but that was partially my fantastically bad timing, since I tuned in during January of last year XD). I've historically been great at getting into things at the absolute worst times, though. CS, a decade behind all fads. It all started with the My Little Ponies and just got progressively worse.
I hope the new show will be more relaxed, too. At this point, I don't see how it couldn't be.
