Blogging Cookbook Recipes Question

Apr 25, 2014 11:45

I'm doing a project for fun where I'm cooking recipes from around the world. So far I have done Afghanistan and have started Albania. My problem is that most of the recipes I've done are from cookbooks. I want to blog about what I've done, etc. Can I post the recipes form the cookbooks I've done? Or is that total copyright violation? How much can I ( Read more... )

As long as you site your source, you're good. Although, Cooks Illustrated is very uptight about it and will go after you if you post about their recipes...

I wonder why they're specifically so aggressive about it? and thank you!

Because it affects their livelihood.

I meant why they're specifically so aggressive about it and not, let say, Bon Appetit, unless they are too?

I think many companies are protective. Some companies do have a larger online business (for instance, I think CI and ATK have a by-subscription recipe reservoir online?) and so copying and pasting their recipes publicly on the internet hurts that aspect of their business specifically.

Ahhhhh OK, that makes sense, thank you.

What do you suggest I do? I'm not doing this for money or anything like that. I'd be posting it to my friends only LJ and to a public Word Press blog I do that has very few followers. I'm hoping it's OK to post some recipes from the books, but I definitely don't want to if it's not.

Inside the book should be the publisher -- you can just find contact info and ask. As I mentioned, usually they're happy to have someone post a recipe or two in return for a mention of the book. You can also adapt the recipe wording and post it in your own words, still linking to the book to give credit. As I said, I usually think it's nice to ask. I had a sweet experience doing so, wherein the Brass sisters sent me an autographed copy of one of their books after I contacted the publisher to ask to post a recipe.

Oops, I didn't see you had already commented. Thank you, I'll definitely do that! I already contacted one of the books publishers, it's put out by a church and that's how I got it, so I have their email, etc. I'll look for the other one. That's really sweet about the Brass sisters! Do you have a cooking blog?

Also, for as many recipes as you can, finding them on other blogs might be a good idea. Bloggers are easy to contact quickly :)

I didn't think of that, good idea, thank you! Though for Albania, there seems to not be that much available online, which surprises me.
