Sufganiyot (Jelly Donuts)

Chanukah started on Saturday night. Observed for 8 days, Chanukah celebrates the triumph of light over dark. After the Macabees defeated the Greeks and reclaimed the Holy Temple, they went to light the menorah (7 branched candelabra) and found that there was only enough oil to last for one day. The miracle of Chanukah is that the oil lasted for ( Read more... )

Happy Chanukah. Love the donuts especially raspberry filled ones. How big do you cut your donuts ... 3", 4"?

I cut mine about 2 1/2", you can definitely make them bigger though.

Thank you for the additional info. I like to get a sense of size, expected yield so I know if I'm doing it properly. :) My mom used to do a looser dough scoop version with raisins stirred in, sort of like free form fritters, for us when we were craving donuts but jelly filled have always been my favourites. As I got older, I went for the Boston creams. :)

I'm surprised you don't use something like a icing gun filled with jelly and a straight nozzle to inject the donuts like you would for cream puffs. It's a snap.

If I had one I totally would. This was my first time filling anything. It didn't go too badly with a Ziploc bag but did get kind of messy towards the end.

Necessity is the mother of invention ... as they say. :) Kudos for the great job you did in that case cause you made a LOT of donuts. It might be a good idea to hit a dollar store for next time to make things easier for you. Though for me the frying would have been the hardest/messiest part of the whole thing.

haha I always check the dollar store first when I need a new kitchen tool/utensil! The frying was the easiest and least time-consuming part of the whole thing. A labor of love, though :)

I love the dollar stores too. :)

I have a frying-phobia so for me that's the hardest part. One of the reasons I make samosas so rarely and it took me ages to finally make churros (I'd rather make cream puffs) ... though they were wonderful when I finally got around to it. Just seems like a lot of effort and the cleanup is a pain.

For the churros...
