I don't really have a recipe but an idea for a potluck party (so mods feel free to delete if not appropriate). My friends and I try to get together at least every other month to have a ladies' night potluck. Last night we had a Russian Roulette theme potluck. One of my friends suggested it, so I don't know if its an actual thing as my google skills have failed me (I only found blogs about really bad potluck experiences). So this is how the 'game' is played:
1) Make a dish that can be served individually (cupcakes, potstickers, empanadas, etc.) or that can be easily divided (pie, quiche, cake, etc).
2) Make one serving or individual unit different from the others. For example, if you are making gyoza, make one with stonefruit and the rest with vegetables and pork. Or if you make a quiche, make one of the servings taste like burning. Think
Mardi Gras King Cake with the plastic babies. The object is that the serving should look the same as the rest from the outside but once eaten the victim, I mean participant, knows that something is amiss.
The object is for all of us to be amused while someone else squirms. Though the suprises can be nice! ;-)
You can even have prizes: for whomever received the most 'surprises', dodged the most, and whomever had the most creative surprise.
Last night we made the following:
1. Sweet potato rolled tacos (surprise: lentil taco filling)
2. Spinach, mushroom, and cheese empanada (surprise: bittermelon - I got this one but had no idea what bittermelon tasted like so I just thought she didn't do a good job and I ate the whole thing to be polite. It wasn't until I had another one that I realized I got the surprise!)
3. Curry carrot dip with rice cracker (surprise: sugar in one of the bites)
4. Ravioli bites - one with ricotta, spinach and sundried tomatoes; the other ricotta and peperoni. (surprise: too much salt - I got this one, it was totally inedible.)
5. Deviled eggs (surprise: food coloring - to stain someone's mouth black - this one won for most creative surprise)
6. Homemade twinkies (surprise: jellybeans)
Anyway, it was a lot of fun and different from the run of the mill potluck dinners that seem to always pop up around the holidays. We had such a good time that we might do another one in the spring. Ideas for future dishes?
