Sugar Cookies! (for cut outs)

Nov 19, 2012 22:47

I spent the afternoon with my friend Anne helping her granddaughter make sugar cookies.

Sugar Cookies (for cut outs)
1 cup butter (room temperature)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
3 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups flour

Cream together the butter and sugar.
Thoroughly incorporate the egg.
Mix in the milk and vanilla.
Mix in the baking powder and salt.
Mix in the flour
Divide in three and refrigerate for 20 minutes to an hour (or overnight)
Preheat the oven to 400F
Roll out one third of the dough to between 1/8" and 1/4"
Cut out shapes using cookie cutters dipped in flour. (You can roll out the dough on parchment paper, cut out the shapes, then remove the excess dough and put the parchment paper right on the cookie sheet and into the oven)
Bake for 5-9 minutes at 400F until just beginning to brown on the edges.
Allow to cool before decorating.

We decorated them with a glaze made of powdered sugar, vanilla, milk, and food coloring. It takes very little liquid to dissolve powdered sugar so start a few drops and add more as necessary.  We also used dragées, colored sugar, and decorative shaped sprinkles.

Clean paint brushes to apply the glaze and clean tweezers to position candy decorations might be helpful.

If your cookies spread out during baking your dough needs more flour.  These cookies are not supposed to spread or lose their shape.
