University Meals

Aug 19, 2012 12:44

I'm going to university in September, and I've realised that I barely know any meals to cook.
I can make pasta and cakes and I can cook sauce. But that's about it.
I wondered if you could recommend any easy meals that I could cook, or any variations to simple pasta meals?
Thanks!

one of the masterchef conestants here wrote a book that might be really useful. he went around to different uni's and taught cooking classes to show students you can feed yourself easy, healthy, cheap meals and not have to live on take away

Hmmm, as a college student you'll be wanting something filling and cheap ( ... )

Vegetables in chili con carne? That is an interesting variation.

It's true they wouldn't normally be there, but...uni students are cheap. They need to use what they've got, and if there's a cheap, simple way to get a little greenery into them, then why not take it?

Hamburgers or meatballs

Soups - chicken soup, beef stew, chili, and so on

Do you have access to a grill? Grilling isn't that time and labor intensive.

Also, I would suggest getting a crockpot- you just dump things in, and when you come home from a hard day, it's ready!
Things like pot roast, chicken and rice, etc. are nice and make good lunches/leftover meals.

Most universities and colleges that I know of ban crockpots and rice cookers, so if the OP does take that route, they need to know what their college's stance is. (Admittedly, I hid my "banned appliances" throughout college, but not everyone wants to take that route.)

Vegetables (+ protein of your choice: meat, tofu, egg) sautéed (in or with sauce of your choice, eg. soy/garlic/ginger, satay, etc.) on rice.
Easy, healthy, so delicious.

This is what I ate at least 3 or 4 nights a week while I was at uni.
