Because I am expecting my first child and pregnancy makes you sentimental, I'm thinking about putting together a "Mom's Cookbook" that I can add to and refine over the years. I've got lots of ideas for recipes, which is important, but I'd also like to include general guidelines for cooking and working in the kitchen. Right now, I'm considering some ( Read more... )

I've learned it multiple times, despite the first time resulting in the smell of burning plastic (who the hell keeps non-ovenproof things in the freaking oven anyway???)

Also, make sure the burners are cold before putting plastic bowls on them.

Haha, that's a very good one! I currently have one of those glass top stoves that I haaaaate, but it's one great feature is that the light stays on as long as the burner is warm, even after you turn it off.

Or, plastic cutting boards. Lost two this way. And the smell of melty plastic is disgusting.

Make sure the burners are cold before putting anything down. I once set my dorm kitchen on fire with a pot holder. :-P

Oh yes. Learned from sad (and messy!) experience.

Also: always read the recipe at least once before you start. Twice is better. Have all your ingredients & equipment ready before you start. Clean as you go along. When in doubt, throw it out. And the one my father drilled into me from the time I was very young: if you drop a knife, don't try to catch it!
