French Potato Soup... or, Onions Are Icky

Nov 27, 2009 19:45

So as a way of procrastinating on the last 10k of my NaNoWriMo novel, I've been playing Cafe World on Facebook kind of a lot today. One of the things I made in my little pretend restaurant was French Onion Soup, and that little pixelated bowl of melted cheese looked sooooooo good. I wanted to make my own, except I hate onions. I googled for a bit ( Read more... )

I agree, onions aren't icky. Especially in french onion soup.

And I suspect this recipe would taste so unlike french onion soup that it wouldn't be right to call it "french potato soup", especially since the onions contribute so much to the distinct flavour of the soup. Although I could very well be wrong. Have you had french onion soup before? How do the tastes differ?

I've never had an onion that I liked. Yes, I've tried them different ways (people always think I haven't) and I just plain don't like them.

I'm sure it tastes very different from the real thing. I won't even pretend they taste the same! But I've never had the real thing before so I can't tell you how they are different. This had a very rich, warm taste, and it was very satisfying. I suspect that the real thing probably has a bit more sweetness to it maybe, with the caramelization of the onions, but I wouldn't know to truly be able to compare.

As for the name, I called it that just because I took the basic idea of French Onion Soup and tweaked it to suit my tastes and what I had handy. And I just couldn't come up with a better name :)

You know, I've heard that? But I just can't bring myself to believe it. You see, I've heard so many times "Oh, I usually don't like onions, but I like them this way!" and invariably I end up not liking them. So now, I have this Pavlovian reaction to such statements, where I just instinctively think it's a trap. Alarm bells go off and everything.

Someday I might try it, but for now, I like this soup :)

I'm making pancakes on 7 or 8 stoves, and peking duck on two. And I've got my waiters trapped behind the counters so they just throw the food across the room at the customers, which is awesome.

Cafeworld (and Restaurant City) has inspired several cooking ventures for me lately. Kudos for finding a way to make it work for you.

They both give me crazy cravings for different foods. Especially the hot wings in Cafe World lately. I want wings soooooo bad. On Tuesday (payday) I'll definitely be having wings, whether I make them myself or buy them!

As one who dislikes onions as well I rejoice and love your recipe. This will be tried on a later date.
