Turning ketchup into pasta sauce?

Aug 02, 2009 11:46

I have a huge bottle of ketchup that's about to expire and I want to use it up in one go if possible. As meat loaf isn't an option, I'm thinking spaghetti sauce. Does anyone have any experience turning ketchup into semi-decent pasta sauce? What ingredients I should add to make it not taste so ketchup-y, etc etc. Thanks!

Ketchup is filled with vinegar and sugar. Neither of these things should be in spaghetti sauce.

Your best bet is to find a friend who needs some ketchup. And trade for a can of chunky tomatoes.

Ditto. Only do this if you're so seriously broke that all you have is noodles and ketchup. It's better than mustard on noodles, but not by much.

That would depend on the brand used and how you want the final sauce to taste. But, for all the work you're going to put into changing the taste of ketchup, you may just as well make some from scratch.

The big hurdle you'll have to clear is balancing out all that extra sugar that is in most ketchups. After that, it's up to your taste buds.

this. it's probably not the healthiest but I've eaten some questionably old condiments.

Unless the ketchup tastes off, don't worry about it too much.

It does go off - I remember a job I had once, stocking supermarket shelves, I came across some (unopened, of course) ketchup on the shelf (out where the shopping was done) that had large green spheres in it.

But I'd agree with the rest - look for a different kind of sauce to make with it, and don't think that the date on the bottle is written in stone.
