not really food, but...

So, I'm pretty sick right now. Which is a bummer. When I was little and my lungs hurt like this, my mommy used to make a "mustard plaster", and put it on my neck and chest. Supposedly, it draws out/kills infection. It probably just worked because my mommy made it. Anyhow, I know it's made with mustard powder and baking soda and some other stuff ( ( Read more... )

I've never used the "mustard plaster," although it sounds REALLY neat and I'll look into it. However, I've got some other ideas that work, if you're interested.

For a sore throat, boil some cabbage leaves and (when cool enough - you still want them to be warm) wrap them around your throat and hold with a warm cloth. Don't ask me why, but it works.

For a general cold or fever, spread a little bit of olive oil on the sole of your foot. Take a clove of garlic, cut it in half, and rub the cut end on the olive oil. Within a minute you'll be able to taste the garlic in your mouth and it will have traveled through your bloodstream. Very weird, but it works WONDERS. Do this a couple of times a day if you can.

If you're maiking yourself chicken soup, try adding some onion, garlic, and a little bit of cayenne pepper. Don't make it too-too spicy, but all of these will help bring down a fever.

Oh yeah, and finally, boil some apples in water. When they've cooled, drink the water with a little honey. This also helps bring down fevers (and if you've got a sick tummy, try mixing this with pretty strong peppermint or ginger tea).

Sorry to be so verbose, but I hope this helps a little. I hope you feel better!!!
