History:
Sawada Tsunayoshi (for short, Tsuna) was a normal 13 year old boy, or as normal as a complete failure could be. He was never good in school, terrible at sports and even worse at everything else. Generally, Tsuna is known by his classmates as “No-Good Tsuna” for his general behavior and ability at everything. However, one day a baby in a suit shows up at his door step after a shady flier shows up announcing his presence.
This particular baby's name was Reborn, and he was there to tutor Tsuna. Tsuna, not really believing it, left for school but found out the baby was actually a gun wielding Mafia Hitman and he shot him square in the head. Tsuna, happened to have the regret of not telling Kyoko, the girl he had a crush on, that he liked her. The no good teen was then 'reborn' with his 'dying will' (his clothes magically ripping off), which caused him to run off with impossible speed to Kyoko to confess to her in his boxer shorts.
Kyoko naturally ran off scared and Tsuna was left there in his boxers, wondering what happened. He finds out that he was shot with something called the 'dying will bullet' which is something that, when the person is shot, is resurrected by the last regret he or she had. This bullet is special to the Vongola Family which Tsuna finds out he is the next candidate to become the tenth boss of the family. Naturally, Tsuna wants nothing to do with the mafia, but Reborn won't hear that, so he continues to put Tsuna into near death situations under the disguise of “training”.
Even though Tsuna complains and denies his right to the to the Vongola legacy, the brunet gains so many friends, which he never had before. From a delinquent teen with dynamite to a five year old in a cow suit, Tsuna gains and maintains a ton of friendships (though Reborn says they are recruiting for their family) and is generally happier. However, soon that is tested by the fact that students at his middle school are getting attacked, mostly the people that he is friends with. While his friends are trying to protect him, they find out that it's a hit against Tsuna by a Rokudo Mukuro, an ex convict who broke out of prison in Italy and came to Tsuna's town especially to take over his body and cause chaos within the mafia because of a personal vendetta against them.
Tsuna, having watched Gokudera (one of his friends) sacrifice himself for him, and Ryohei, the older brother of his crush, Kyoko, be beat to a pulp by Mukuro's men, he decided to face Mukuro, albeit hesitantly. He didn't think that he could beat Mukuro because of the fact that the strongest person in Namimori, Hibari Kyoya didn't come back when he went to face him. When he faced Mukuro though, while still hesitant, Tsuna discovers his 'Hyper Dying Will', which focuses on his calm fighting spirit and his natural intuition into things to help him win. Upon winning the battle, Tsuna was in pain for days but Mukuro was taken to a high security prison.
After the battle with Mukuro, Tsuna didn't have much time to relax. The reappearance of his father who he had thought was missing was the catalyst for a series of events that led to Tsuna and six of his friends to obtain the Half Vongola Rings (which were separated by weather patterns: Sky (Tsuna), Rain (Yamamoto), Storm (Gokudera), Thunder (Lambo), Sun (Ryohei), Mist (Chrome/Mukuro)and Cloud (Hibari) ). The other half of the rings were given to the Varia, who are the special assassin team for the Vongola Family. Xanxus, the leader of the Varia, got someone to act in for the ninth and stage a battle between Tsuna's friends and the Varia. This was going to be the battle for the Vongola Rings, which was going to be six battles to see which side got the most rings (basically, element against element (Rain (Tsuna's friend)vs Rain (Varia assassin)) . Each of Tsuna's friends The real ninth leader would naturally be opposed, but he was trapped inside the Gola Mosca, a robot that uses a persons life force to function, having been kidnapped by Xanxus.
Tsuna fought the robot when it was out of control, discovering that he seriously injured the ninth boss, who then passed something on to Tsuna to give proof of his right to have the Vongola Sky ring. After that Tsuna, who had up to this point, been unsure and almost scared of Xanxus, told him he would not follow in the footsteps of the ninth, and that he would fight Xanxus for the sky ring. The battle took place the next night and while Tsuna eventually did win, it was because of his Zero Point Breakthrough ability that saved him. Not only that, but the Vongola Ring, when taken away from him by Xanxus' illusionist, rejected Xanxus' blood because he wasn't related to the ninth in any way. He was the adopted son of the ninth boss.
The judges decided to figure out what to do about Xanxus, and Tsuna won by forfeit. Passing out, Tsuna slept for the next day, resting his body from the battle. Upon waking up, the group celebrated their victory, but soon after Reborn had Tsuna back at work, so he could catch up on all the homework he missed while he was out of school. At this time, Reborn made the comment that he wouldn't be around forever.
-this is the point in time where I will be taking Tsuna out of, the arc I will explain below is just the rest of his canon history.-
The next day, after getting in a fight with Lambo, Reborn was sent off to the future with Lambo's ten year bazooka, but no one was in his place. Tsuna didn't think anything of it, but when the tutor didn't show back up after the five minute time slot, he was worried. Searching desperately for Reborn, Tsuna came to realize that he needed to talk to Lambo about it, and accidentally got hit with the bazooka as well, sending himself nine years and ten months into the future.
Tsuna's future wasn't as bright as one would expect of a mafia boss of a huge family. The Sawada Tsunayoshi of the future was actually dead, which would be the reason why the present time Tsuna woke up in a coffin. The Future Gokudera attempted to explain things to him, but he was transformed into the Present Gokudera before being able to gain any answers. The only thing Tsuna is able to find out about is a man named Irie Shouichi, and how he needed to be destroyed.
Soon after, they run into Lal Mirch, who takes them (along with the Future Yamamoto) to the Vongola base in Namimori (as that's where they ended up). Reborn was at the base and in strange clothes because the atmosphere of the future world was unable to be handled by the Hitman. It was dangerous to his health because of a particular radiation that was being given off by what everyone figures is the Millefiore family, which was led by Byakuran, who were a combination of two smaller mafia families. They were the reason for the Future Tsuna's death but also the reason for hunt on all Vongola members.
Eventually, more of Tsuna's friends are transported to the future, including the children, Lambo and I-pin and the girls, Kyoko and Haru. Tsuna is desperate to get everyone back home, but realizes after the Future Ryohei shows up that the only way to do so is to infiltrate the Melone Base and capture Irie Shouichi. After going through harsh training and obtaining new techniques, the group heads off to infiltrate. Tsuna ends up kidnapped after his fight with King Mosca, but Spanner wants to perfect Tsuna's X-Burner and turns out to be an ally.
Once the X-burner is completed, Tsuna faces the toughtest fighter in the Black Spell faction of the Millefiore, Genkishi. He won, but not before almost dying at the hands of his own family, which Genkishi summoned by their spirits and tempering them with mist flames. Tsuna defeated him without hurting any of them, using the X-burner to win. It was at this point that he was able to gain access to Shouichi's lab.
The group discovers at this point that Shouichi has been a good guy the whole time, acting as a spy. Byakuran found out about this, and knew the whole time, telling them they had ten days after the Varia defeated the base in Italy to train and use the Vongola boxes they obtained from the Future Tsuna, who, like the rest of their future selves, were encased in Shouichi's round machine that Tsuna had foreseen in a dream.
They are to play a game of “choice” with the six funeral wreaths (the actual ones, not the fake ones that Byakuran set up to confuse Shouichi), a game that Shouichi came up with when he was in high school. They trained for ten days to get better and to be able to use the boxes that were given to them, and they are getting ready to be transported to the field were they will fight them, Tsuna resolved to help his family win. They however, lost in the battle, but the second in command, Uni, said that by her choice, she wanted a second round to take place. Byakuran didn't agree with this set up, and attempted to take Uni back (who is in control of the Acrobaleno pacifiers and the leader of them as well), but they escaped back to Namimori of the future and hid out only temporarily.
From there, the final battle was to take place where all of it started, in the forest where Tsuna first came to the future. Staying back to protect Uni, everyone put up a front to protect the two bosses, but it was to no avail when Ghost, one of Byakuran's parallel selves, steals all of their dying will flames for his own. Tsuna then jumps in and counters with his own ability to absorb the flames, but it doesn't work, as Ghost becomes a part of Byakuran, along with his power.
This is where the final battle truly starts. They fight and Tsuna is ridiculously overpowered by Bykauran. Because they are the rare sky ring types, they react against each other (Pulling Uni in as well, as she is part of the trinity of the Trinisette (the energy that created the world)) and create a force field that noone can penetrate. Tsuna is in a choke hold and the Acrobaleno, who were previously dead, are reviving from their pacifiers, but it takes an hour. Byakuran then twists Tsuna's neck and he seemingly is dead, until Reborn's words of encouragment some how pull him back and he stands up.
He swears from this point that he will defeat Byakuran, because it is revealed that to revive the Acrobaleno, Uni has to die. From there, the first Generation Vongola family, including the First boss (Tsuna's great great grandfather) unlock the true power of the Vongola Rings. After this happens and Tsuna starts to have the upper hand, Uni states she is afraid to die, so the Vongola open the forcefield enough for Gamma, her confidant, to get through and say he'll die with her. They pass and the flame is passed on the to the pacifiers so they can be reborn.
Tsuna goes into a rage against the hurt Byakuran, blaming him for Uni's death, claiming he will kill him. They go head to head in the final part of the battle. His X-Burner's power is multiplied by the true power of his Vongola Ring and he kills Byakuran, leaving only the other's Sky Mare Ring behind. It is then that the Acrobaleno are revived to send Tsuna and his friends back to their time, much to the relief of Tsuna, who had worked hard to fulfill the promise he made to return everyone to their rightful time.
Things slowly return to normal for Tsuna at this point, until seven middle schoolers transfer into this school. They are from Shimon Middle, and all seem to be rather normal students. Sort of. Come to fing out, after stopping a fight that was going on between Adelheid and Hibari per Reborn's forceful instruction, Tsuna and the others discover that the middle schoolers are part of a very small Mafia family. They have come from their home because they were invited to Tsuna's inheritance (of the Tenth Vongola boss title) ceremony, which is to take place in seven days.
Tsuna denies this, wanting to badly stay out of the mafia business for forever, and Enma, one of the middle schoolers who is about as no-good (or possibly even more no-good) as him tells him he should run away. Reborn naturally objects this, but there isn't much time for discussion when Tsuna and Enma are attacked. Tsuna goes into his dying will mode and wins the battle easily.
After this, the students of Shimon start to warm up to the others, and they all take turns with the Vongola guardians to protect Tsuna until the ceremony. It's at this point that the Ninth calls Tsuna to his hotel a few days before and speaks to him about being the Tenth. At the time, Tsuna says he will think about what he wants to do, but the Ninth advises him that if he doesn't take it, the violence within the Vongola will continue and there will always be fighting. Tsuna, however, still decides that day before that he will not be the tenth, because he doesn't want to be involved.
However, after he tells the ninth this decision, he gets a phone call at the hotel from Gokudera, saying that Yamamoto's been hurt. Rushing to the hospital, he discovers Yamamoto has been attacked by someone and put in critical care. It is here that he changes his mind and goes through with the ceremony to become the Tenth Boss. At the ceremony, Tsuna is to be given “SIN” which is a bottle of blood from the First Generation boss. Enma and the others attack, revealing that their intention is to wipe out and obtain “SIN” which is the blood of the first Shimon boss. They want to regain their pride and prestige they had, which was taken from them when the first Vongola boss betrayed their first boss.
Tsuna states that the first boss would never have done something like that, and Enma refuses to believe it, attacking Tsuna's guardians. They all go down quickly, their Vongola Rings broken. Tsuna attempts to fight, but is also beaten and his ring destroyed (Chrome is taken). They learn that Shimon, in seven days, will be at full power, so they get the rings fixed (into different weapons) and intend on fighting them. Tsuna says that it's a misunderstanding (partially, it is, as Tsuna was not aware of an earlier letter that Enma wrote him to test his intentions as a mafia boss), and he wants to clear it up, so that's why they can't lose. They go to the island that the ninth's family finds out they are at, meeting up with.
It is then they learn that the Shimon are on an Island. Tsuna wants to understand what exactly happened to make the Shimon so upset with the Vongola, but also save Chrome and avenge Yamamoto. Ryohei, Gokudera and Lambo go with him, and they are to fight each of the Shimon guardians to obtain a “key” which will allow the Shimon and the Vongola to see into the past at what happened between the Families. The losers of these battles, regrettfully, is taken into the care of the Vendice (this also applies to a Tie; both opponents will be taken in that case). The first battle, Ryohei ends up in a draw with Koyo and taken, but before he is, he says that Tsuna will find his pride and learn to fight for it. It is here that the first key shows that Giotto and Cozart were very good friend initially. As the fights wear on, the Vongola continue to win, and the memories show that the Shimon and Vongola were never at odds with each other.
However, at the end of Gokudera's fight, when Shitt P. is taken, Enma shows up, enraged. Tsuna, also angry at how many of his friends have been hurt by this whole thing, gosh into dying will form and started to fight with Enma. However, the fight is short lived when Enma tells Tsuna that Iemitsu, Tsuna's father, killed Enma's family. Tsuna goes into a depressed, quiet state, unable to react to anything, even when hit. Enma's power rebounds on him and he retires with Adelheid, leaving Tsuna to continue to be out of it as Gokudera, Lambo, Reborn and him continue on.
Tsuna states that he doesn't know the reason why he's fighting anymore, or if is even doing the right thing. Adelheid comes to face them next, which is when Hibari shows up. Before his battle, he passes by Tsuna and tells him to watch the fight, as he will learn something from it. After Hibari is victorious, they obtain the next key, which officially states that the Vongola were trying to save Shimon when they were in a time of need. Julie Katou shows up with a hypnotized Chrome, revealing himself to not be Julie at all. He is actually Daemon Spade, Giotto's Mist Guardian. They go to help Hibari, but Chrome makes a mist shield and blocks all of them from attacking Spade, who states that he was the reason all of the fighting was going on. Kaoru, who was Yamamoto's attacker, finally reveals himself and stabs Spade, only to have it rebounded on himself because of Spade's abilities.
It is then that Yamamoto shows up and helps, but Kaoru is still taken away with Adelheid by the Vendice. Before then, it is revealed that Spade did betray the Vongola in an attempt to pit the Shimon on them, but the “guards” he was telling to kill Cozart were actually Giotto's guardian's. They didn't kill Cozart, they saved him. Spade is angered by these turns of events, and Yamamoto attacks with his vongola gear, doing some damage. However, Spade runs and Yamamoto give Chrome her sealed Vongola Gear, telling her they would be waiting.
That evening, they are resting and Reborn asks Tsuna if he's feeling better. Tsuna states that yes, because Hibari's battle has given him a hint. He says that while he is aware of the weakness in his own heart, he knows what his pride is. He knows that he has to fight for his friends and he should have never stopped believing in his father. He has to believe not only in them, but himself too, and his own abilities. By recognizing the weakness in his heart and not letting it overpower him again, Tsuna is able to call out Nuts, his lion, and is renewed in saving Enma from the rebound of his abilities, as well as defeat Spade.
Personality:
Tsuna is a rather interesting character for the fact that he starts out as a wimpy, no good failure who will probably never amount to anything in life. He believes all the bad things that people say about him, solely for the fact that he has no confidence. Tsuna doesn't do anything at first without a slightly selfish intention, because he desperately wants to be noticed and recognized, to be good at something (he even comments that he wishes he was as good as Yamamoto is at sports), but it never works out for him. Suddenly though, and literally overnight, Tsuna has the role of a leader thrust upon him and he denies taking it up, as the life of a mafia boss isn't an easy one.
However, Tsuna's personality starts to change as he gains more friends. He realizes that there is something in his life he wants to protect, even at the cost of his own life. These people are not just his friends, but inadvertently like a family to him, protecting him and loving him despite his faults. Tsuna then gains the power to be able to protect that love, and be able to enjoy those times with his friends that he had never had before: going out shopping, hanging out at home...things that a normal kid is supposed to have.
Not only that, but along with Tsuna's strength he gets from protecting others, he becomes a genuinely honest person and exceptionally brave. Tsuna is the type who even though he is shaking and doesn't want to fight, he swallows that to become a fairly forward and brave person even without his dying will. He does what he knows is right even if it takes him awhile (or needs some help) to realize what he needs to do. Tsuna, however, is not free from fault. He still does not handle the role of being a leader incredibly well, and is almost awkward and slow about making decisions, but that also brings into light another part of his personality: His intuition.
Tsuna is innately intuitive about people. This is something that is passed on through the Vongola lineage called Hyper Intuition. While the Hyper Intuition really only shows itself when he is in his hyper dying will mode, Tsuna's intuition about people has also helped him in battle. He is able to know if a person is really truly evil, to know if they are going to hurt others. Not only that, but it helps him as well to know what to do or say in dire situations, such as the choice he had to make about infiltrating the Melone Base. He was faced with all the cons of the situation, but based on his intuition, he knew things could not continue the way they were going. Even if they weren't ready, they would have to fight.
Basically, while Tsuna has become an honest and brave person, he still have moments were his no-good personality comes out. He is still hesitant, he still shakes when he is scared, but he is better about managing it because of his desire to protect those things important to him.
