fic_promptly Dan yawned and stretched his arms above his head, rolling his shoulders to try and release some of the tension stored up there. He, Chloe and Lucifer had been working all night, trawling through file after file looking for the clue that would break this case.
Well, he and Chloe had been working. Lucifer had mostly been playing games on his phone and trying - unsuccessfully, thank goodness - to flirt with Dan's ex-wife. Dan wished Lucifer had gone home hours ago, but Chloe had insisted he stay and help.
Dan reached for his coffee cup and tipped the last dregs of cold, bitter coffee into his mouth. What he wouldn't give for a decent Starbucks espresso instead of the dross that came out of the station's coffee machine.
"I'd sell my soul for a proper coffee and a donut right now," he muttered to Chloe as he set the mug back down.
"You shouldn't say such things in front of the devil, Daniel," Lucifer announced cheerfully, even though Dan hadn't been speaking to him. "Very careless. You wouldn't want to end up without a soul for the sake of a Krispy Kreme." He looked Dan up and down and smirked. "Though in your case, I suppose it would be a fair trade."
"Excuse me?" Dan snapped, tiredness making him edgier than usual. "You saying my soul's not worth much?"
"You were the one who made the offer," Lucifer pointed out lazily. "I'm just saying, I'd be happy to oblige."
"You -" Dan started, only to have Chloe lay a calming hand on his arm and shush him.
"Lucifer, why don't you go and get us all some decent coffee and donuts?" she said, giving Lucifer a pointed glance.
"Fine, anything's better than this," Lucifer said, shrugging and then rising from his office chair with irritating grace. He threw a grin over his shoulder as he left. "If I'm getting donuts for you both, does that mean I get both your souls?"
"No! Go, now!" Chloe said, waving him off, and Dan watched him leave with relief.
"Why is he here anyway?" Dan griped as he picked up another file to look through. "He's not exactly helping."
Chloe glanced at him, then glanced away. "He's helping a little," she said, but Dan could tell she didn't believe it. Which left only one reason why Chloe had told Lucifer to hang around. She wanted him here.
Dan stared down at the file in his lap, and was suddenly struck by the thought that if he was going to sell his soul for something, it would be for Lucifer to stay the hell away from Chloe.
