Question List

Day 12: Favourite YOUNGER Female Character
Quinn Fabray (Glee)

I wasn't sure who to choose for this question. A good deal of the characters I watch/have watched on TV could be classed as 'younger', due to my love of high-school shows, both now and a few years ago when I was that age. I thought therefore that I should pick an actual child, but I can't think of any actual children in TV shows who I've liked. So I have deemed high school to be young enough, and decided to choose someone from Glee, mostly because unlike a lot of high school shows where the characters look and act way too old for their age, the kids in Glee actually act like they really are foolish teenagers.

At first I chose Rachel, but when trying to write the blurb for her, I found I couldn't do so with much passion. I like Rachel. I like to watch her. I like her looks, and her talent, and the incredibly comic moments she has. But I don't really identify with her. She is more talented than I will ever be. She has her life planned out and she will almost certainly achieve her dreams. I don't know what I'm doing, and I almost certainly will not achieve any of my dreams, due to my ill health. She has a belief in herself that is beyond anything I've ever felt. And so I wondered, who else could I choose who might be a little more identifiable?

I hated Quinn at first. Probably because I liked Rachel, and also because she was written to be the character you hated. But after a while, I started to like her. More importantly, I started to understand her. She makes mistakes, she lies, she is at many times not a good person. But I could see why she did the things she did, I could feel her insecurity, I could sympathise with her idiotic moments. Quinn has been through a lot, and whilst she's not always been through it in the right way, she has come out the other side. And she has an occasional moment of kindness amid a history of meanness, or positivity amid an atmosphere of negativity, where I look at her and think: wow. Of course, it's Glee, so sometimes the insane writing puts her actions beyond the pale (her behaviour at Shelby's apartment, for example), but I'm just going to ignore that, because, y'know... it's Glee.
