Question List

Day 7: Favourite Female Character in a CHILDREN'S show
Rose Tyler (Doctor Who)

OK, so technically Doctor Who is a family show and not exclusively a children's show, but of the few children's shows that I can remember well enough, or still watch, there were not really any characters worthy of this meme. Besides, chamilet used Rose for this question too, so I figure it's good enough ;)

Billie Piper was the reason I turned Doctor Who on in the first place. I'd never had any interest in the programme before, and although I was a Buffy nut, I didn't identify myself as a 'sci-fi' fan. And I'd never heard of Christopher Eccleston. I had however, heard of Billie, having bought her first and second albums thanks to joyful songs such as 'Because We Want To' *blush*. So without Billie being advertised as the Doctor's companion, I would probably never have watched the reboot, never have seen Captain Jack, and possibly never have watched Torchwood. MY LIFE WOULD BE SO EMPTY NOW, WAIIIIL!

So, what's Rose like? In a word: awesome. She was so normal, so accessible, so like any one of us. She ate too many chips and wore too much mascara and didn't know what she was doing with her life. But she was sweet, funny, resilient, and smart in a useful way. She had qualities to aspire to: courage and determination. And she was flawed too, making her even more believable - who didn't cringe as they saw the way she treated Mickey? I saw myself in her flaws, so believed I could also perhaps be as awesome as her. One day.

I loved Rose with Nine, and I loved her even more with Ten. Her return to the series was not great, but that wasn't Rose's fault - in my opinion it was too rushed, too short, there was not enough for her to do, and so the ending was unsatisfactory. But that doesn't make me love her any less.
