The final day! The marathon is over.
I guess I'll have to find something meaningful to put in my posts from now on!
Question List Day 30: Your favourite pairing for ever and ever and ever!
Spike/Buffy (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER)
Ahh, Spike and Buffy. I have to admit I didn't really 'get' this the first time I watched Buffy, back when it was on TV and I was a young teenager. Much like Buffy, I never really got over my schoolgirl-like crush on Angel and so I wasn't too impressed when Spuffy was born. However I did always love Spike, and on some level I think I must have recognised the chemistry between the two, because in a slightly odd moment when I was around 13, I memorised the entire hallway scene from School Hard and the negotiating-a-deal scene from Becoming Part 2.
And then! A couple of years ago I rewatched Buffy from start to finish. I hadn't got much of a recollection of seasons 6 and 7, so I couldn't remember exactly where Spike and Buffy's relationship was going, but I was suddenly seeing their interaction in a whole new light, and loving it. With my more adult eyes, I saw Spike's stalking of Buffy through The Bronze in School Hard as a hell of a lot more sexual, and my shipping of them was born.
I can't express how much I love the way that the relationship between the two of them develops. At times it makes me angry, particularly when Buffy treats Spike badly, but I think it's written in a very realistic manner and the emotion, particularly Spike's, is amazingly done, both by the writers and James Marsters.
I adore the way that without Spike, the mouth of hell would have swallowed up...well, pretty much the whole world. And it's not just his sacrifice in Chosen that stopped it; it's the strength he gave Buffy to lead, to go and get the scythe, to not give up, even when EVERYONE ELSE had given up on her. Spike's speech to her in Touched is one of my favourite scenes in any show ever.
I could go on and on about my favourite Spuffy moments throughout all the seasons - the ending of Fool For Love on the porch, the kiss in Intervention, the trust between them in The Gift, the incredibly hot finish of Smashed, the fight for Spike's soul at the end of season 6... but it's season 7 that really gets me. When Buffy spends her last couple of nights on earth with Spike, the love between them in so beautiful. The fact that they (certainly for the first night) only cuddle, is a gorgeous counterpart to the crazy sex everyone else is having. And one of their final scenes in the basement, when Spike stops Buffy from leaving, makes my heart leap every time.
I don't know whether Spike believed Buffy when she told him she loved him, and I don't know whether she believed it either - but that doesn't mean it wasn't true. I firmly, firmly believe that it was.
NOW THEN. Let us not discuss the comics (or even the appallingness of Angel's The Girl In Question). Suffice to say I am pleased I stopped reading the comics after the first few editions. For me, Spike and Buffy's canon story stopped at the end of Chosen. And after that, fanfic is the only way to go!
Could anyone overtake these two as my favourite pairing? Unlikely, though if Torchwood's Jack and Gwen find some way to live happily ever after then we might have to have a throwdown.
