A bit of this and that

It's been awhile since I posted. For one thing, sadly my father passed away last month (he was 91) and I was out of town for a bit as a result. He had been having some health problems but his death came unexpectedly and I was not there when it happened. In Oregon for the funeral, my daughter and I had a very nice visit with my stepmother and her family, so that was good.

Other than that, have been busy with the usual amusements that fill my days. Am still continuing to eat vegan and I've found many vegan restaurants in the area to eat at with friends; I cannot say for sure it is due to that but my weight is down 10 lbs and my blood sugar levels are better (although far from optimum), so I plan to continue with it for awhile.

I was sad to learn of Dick Clark's death. I had several conversations with him back in the sixties when I used to attend tapings of his show, Where The Action Is. I was always very impressed by his professionalism, and his kindness. My favorite, fun memory is when he once told me that my bangs were too long - I trimmed them that evening (about 16 years old at the time, who was I to argue with Dick Clark?) even though months of carping by my mother had never moved me to do so. :o)

I saw Pirates, Band of Misfits because of Martin Freeman and ended up liking it - a fun and clever romp. Also enjoyed The Sound of My Voice despite a weak ending. I was treated to a good performance of Waiting for Godot and it was good although I was baffled by the "plot." Also had a fun time with ghislainem70 seeing my beloved Troubies performing Two Gentlemen of Chicago, a mashup of Shakespeare's tale and the music of Chicago.

Well, for now will leave you with some photos from the past few weeks. Starting off, a beautiful canopy of trees in late afternoon at the Pasadena Museum of History. More photos behind the cut.

One of the beautiful Illuminated manuscripts in the Huntington Library. In contrast to that subject matter, I finally visited their permanent science exhibit on Darwin, evolution, the development of medicine, etc. Fascinating and how wonderful to see an exhibit devoted to rational thinking. I was excited by a display of several hundred copies of On the Origin of Species, including first editions from many countries. In another wing I also saw a lovely if small display of Arthur Conan Doyle manuscripts and books.
