On Despair

It occurs to me that there is, to my knowledge, no worse feeling than that born of the certainty that you held the respect and friendship of an individual once upon a time and have since lost it.

It is only exacerbated by the inability to distinguish exactly what caused this loss, combined with an ability to discuss it with the person(s) in question for fear of only increasing their disdain.

(Discerning readers should, of course, note that this need not negate the feeling's position as "worst," since the above-described situation does not create a separate feeling but simply acts as a variant.)

I hate being disliked when it isn't mutual.
