I never thought I'd be one of those gardeners. The kind that can mercilessly squish bugs with their bare hands. Well, when the Japanese Beetles came in and started foraging through my beans, I didn't know exactly what they were. 3/8th inch long and looking like coppery lady bugs, how destructive could they be, right? Wood ashes may help to get rid of beetles.

Hilarious story, and I totally relate! I'm the weirdo that catches spiders and bees that find their way into the house, then release them back where they belong with a request to not come back.

Oh, spiders get set free at our house too...unless, of course, my husband gets to them first and I don't hear the swatting noises in time. My stepdaughter is scared of them, so she'll shoot into another room should she see one. My assurances to everyone that spiders play an important role in the environment and should be allowed to live out their days in peace falls completely on deaf ears here.

I could never do gardening because I hate bugs! I also just don't care for it :) I think those Japanese beetles are what they call June bugs over there

If you plant grape vines away from the plants you care about, the Japanese beetles should go for those instead of your beans. My understanding is that it's a common companion garden technique.
