Meadow Lights

We took our annual holiday trip to Meadow Lights while my family was here. I wasn't sure how much they would like it, as some of them have seen much bigger holiday installations. Thankfully, everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Pretty sure most of you reading have heard me talk about Meadow Lights in the past, but for those that have not, it is the oldest operated light show in Eastern North Carolina. Run by a single family, Meadow Lights began over 40 years ago with seasonal yard art and grew to include a 30 acre parcel of land. The family begins erecting the displays in mid-September in order to be completed by opening day (late November). An estimated 100,000 people drive to see it each year and I believe it runs through the end of December.

There are lots of patriotic tributes and six religious vignettes. They use life-sized custom mannequins depicting the life of Jesus from birth to resurrection. Admission is free, as is parking. On site, they have a country store that boasts over 300 different varieties of old-fashioned candies, along with cold drinks, Christmas décor, novelties and homemade icebox fruitcakes.

To the right of the country store is a train station. Three mini trains run continuously covering 10 acres of the property. I think the admission price to ride the train is either $2 or $3 per person. Once on the train, you'll notice that each light grouping is themed...transportation, western, gingerbread houses, etc. To the right of the train station is additional restrooms, an enclosed carousel and a concession stand selling hot chocolate, popcorn, hotdogs and other goodies. No single item is more than $2.50 and many of them are $1. A really great, affordable place for young families.

Didn't take a ton of pictures this year, so if you're interested in seeing more (including a video) click here and here.
