Mostly for our Friends and Family mailer.
Most of you that are local know that Camp Lejeune had some water contamination issues for a period of three decades--from the 1950's to the 80's. It has been in the news numerous times, so if you are here in NC, I am not telling you anything new. Essentially, an outside source dumped some industrial solvents outside the base which later leached into the drinking supply. Inside the confines of the base, there were multiple pollutants. All of them contained VOCs--the same thing found in some wall paints. The contamination affected some families or individuals that lived and worked on base during that time (the kids and kids' mom were not there during this window). D, as most of you know, spent quite a bit of time on Lejeune, between deployments and duty stations. He retired in 2006 from Lejeune.
There have been fifteen now sixteen identified medical illnesses that have resulted from that period--some of them reversible and some more chronic or serious. Last year, the President made provisions for those affected singing into law care and support and appropriating funds. Why I am telling you this? Well, D was there during that time. Last year, he was identified as having one of the issues (beginnings of fatty liver). Scary as that may sound it is a very minor, temporary, and reversible problem in the scope of things.
To fix it, we are doing our part to modify our diet slightly (cutting back on sweets, eggs and red meat...which we seldom have) and working toward both of us getting a healthier weight (which can be a contributing factor). His recent for work health screening all showed good progress on weight loss, cholesterol, triglycerides, ALT, HDL/LDL, so we are definitely heading in the right direction. :)
