Garden shots

Our Boston ferns were getting as much traffic as a maternity ward in a major metropolitan area, so we decided this Spring to give them a break. After all, you can't water plants if you have tiny little hatchlings constantly tucked away inside of them. There were a bunch of them. The fennel is in a raised bed, so stands around five foot tall and at least two feet wide. One of the gals was cutting off seed heads, so we had to go through the clippings and rehome any wayward caterpillars before the plant material was put in the compost bin.

The caterpillars are fun and we've got a ton of them. I find it's super easy to overlook critters like that because they tend to blend in. As for the plant, bronze fennel is pretty carefree, tolerates some neglect, is airy and breezy like a dill, but taste of licorice. During the Fall it colors to almost rust. Great place for pollinators to hang out. :)

Gorgeous! I always grow tons of extra parsley hoping for swallowtails, but so far I only get the odd adult visiting.
