Filter Maintenance: If you are on the Writing Filter and wish to be removed for any reason, please let me know.
We all know that one of the very first things we, as prospective readers, are attracted to is a book's cover art. Then there is the blurb on the back cover to entice us. What ultimately decides if I will purchase a book or not? The writing, the style. The first few paragraphs must draw me in, painting a vivid visual picture.
I was told that, as a writer, you are given ten to twenty seconds to engage your reader. Ten to twenty seconds for them to make the determination if they will pay to see the rest. Just out of curiosity, what are the opening lines of your WIP/recently published work? My current WIP (contemporary erotica) touches on the idea that food, in addition to sex, can be a very hedonistic pleasure. The main character is a restaurant critic for a medium circulation paper.
If sex were a flavor, this would be it. Sinfully rich and absurdly decadent, Chocolate Ecstasy had come to be known as Brighton Bay Inn's signature dessert. The cake was a dense Devil's Food, layered with luscious mocha buttercream and enrobed in satiny ganache. Katherine took one last indulgent bite before reluctantly setting her fork down.
