Valentine's Day food follies

(Let me preface this by telling you that the kids aren't allowed to eat in their rooms because they don't pick up wrappers, return dishes to the kitchen, etc.)

I knocked on Chris' (age 10) firmly closed door last night to tell him it was time for him to take a shower. He cracked the door open and said, "Hi!"

Well, with that one word, he was busted! He smelled like a giant Sweet Tart, and the chocolate smeared on his sweater was a dead giveaway. He'd spent the evening eating a LARGE bag of Valentine's Day candy plus the strawberry milkshake he'd smuggled upstairs from dinner.

I couldn't help but laugh because he was trying so hard to be nonchalant! After I told him the jig was up because he smelled like a candy store, we both laughed! Then he cleaned up his room; I checked it again while he was in the shower, and he only hid one small pack of M&Ms.

I can completely understand why he hoards his candy - earlier in the evening, his big sister Miriam (age 12) ate a cheeseburger - that was supposed to be for Kevin (age 15) who was coming home late - after she ate her own meal of chicken tenders and fries.

"It wasn't labeled!" she cried.

How did we know we were supposed to put a Post-It Note on a cheeseburger?!
