Picture a high school marching band practicing on a football field.
Now, insert about 50 preschoolers and lots of strollers throughout the marching band.
Can you see it? What you're witnessing is the yearly Pre-School PTA visit to Rocky River High School's marching band practice.
The band broke out into groups - or bandos wandered around on their own playing their instruments - all stopping whenever a little person came to see the instruments up close. The drummers handed over their drumsticks to little hands, and the woodwinds let Cheerio-crumb lips test their lung power. The flag corps and poms showed future "little Pirates" how to spin the flags and hold the pom poms.
It was a zoo, and so much fun! The older kids were great with the little ones. I took The Divine Miss Cake (age 7) and The Incomparable Chipsie Galore (8 whole months) to participate in the fun. Mr. K greeted us and proceeded to accompany Cake all over the field to try the different instruments. Cake liked the big bass drum and the flags the best!
Chipsie and I went to find big sister Stewie, and then we listened to all the different instruments. The percussionists played their drums and symbols for her. One of the nice tuba players let Chip press the tuba keys, but she liked the clarinet the best; I can't tell if it was because of the tone of the instrument or because of the shiny keys on the front of the clarinet...maybe a little of both.
The band director even had all of the little kids march with the band. Some of the them brought their own instruments, so they all "played" while they marched. It sounded like someone was killing a calliope!
At 8PM, the band played the Rocky River fight song, and then all the little ones left for home.
Miss Cake couldn't stop talking about it until she put her head on the pillow and was out like a light. Chipsie was all wound up and didn't WANT to go to sleep - I'm sure she wanted to practice drum playing on the dog.
