i was offered a "potential" regional sales mgr job (they are going to fire the current mgr soon), and the salary is going to be 6 times more than what i get now...
the catch: i have to work in mainland china, and i would be a senior sales for some time as training (or if you ask me, extra long probation period), before i could become a regional mgr... and it is NOT an office job, i have to visit factories (clients) in the country side (mostly around guangzhou province, including zhuhai & shenzhen), and of course, have to work long hours without OT pay ...
this offer came via a business acquaintance, he recommended me to this position because he thinks i fit the description:
"person who has at least 3 years exp. in the field, fluent in english and cantonese, preferably a bit of mandarin and japanese as well, willing to work in mainland china (ie live there), independent (eg. able to read a map, in order to visit clients in factories located in outskirts of cities/towns alone), eager to learn and trustworthy (ie. no prior connections with any mainland business/companies, so i won't leak/steal any information, and turn a blind eye and not be an active participant in the politics going on between the different branches in the region) "...
they told me i'm basically "hired" straight away, on the same time when i first heard of this opportunity... because that business acquaintance had already told them " all about me"! and all i need to do is send in my resume for admin purposes then i could start this new job any time!
I turned it down...
reasons:
1/ i have no great love of lugging catelogues around, visiting factories in the countryside of southern china, to prove my " independence" ...
2/ i also have no great need to slave long hours day in day out (with no OT pay) like the majority of the workforce (in HK / mainland)...
3/ the word "potential" could take on so many meanings, i believe they can't really guaranttee the "manager" position, even if they have assured me twice...
4/ and even if i do become a manager, there's no guaranttee i would be able to do my job "properly", because i'm sure the staff (especially managers from other less glamourous regions) that are already in the company would think it is unfair to hire a manager from the outside instead of promoting them, and especially when the whole thing is done without even the standard hiring procedure eg. interviews ...
5/ besides the pay is not that high compare to "normal" standard , they could only promise the pay equivalent to the pay of a typical sales person in hk...
so yeah, even if i'm (still) going thru a mainland phase, and it;s a chance to try something "new" and earn a "normal" salary (instead of pocket money like wages from my parents)... the hassle and uncertainties are somehow too great...
