deathnote rant... BEHEMOTH SPOILERS for 99!!

I'm a bit upset, disappointed, sad, angry, cynical...
and the following was my first thought, the comments i posted in death eyes...
"since the death of L, i have to tell myself to be ready for quick deaths of any characters in the world of death note...
i like mello (& matt too), but when he made his re-appearance by kidnapping takada in the last chapter, i was expecting him to die soon... but what i didn't expect is near's reaction...
how could near not forseen this? he was letting lydner (spelling?) to go to mello (and let her leak info to mello) on purpose, and knowing mello's character well, it's not hard to see that mello would pursue such actions when the chance comes...
so was near really all that surprised when he told raito that it was not his doing or intention? he was definitely honest when he say he didn't ask mello to do this, but i somehow found it hard to believe that he was completely surprised by it...
and whether he's surprised or not, near seemed more concerned with how mello's actions might ruin his plan than mello's safety... that bugged me immensely...

the following are thoughts after reading the chapter the 2nd time...
i think the long absence of mello (& matt) was done on purpose... to create maximum impact for his death...
as someone that likes mello, i don't like it, but i'm not saying that it's 'bad'... it's a cheap trick, but it 'works'...
but what i didn't like and think it's 'bad' is how the author (i'm not sure whether this is just the writer or both writer and illustrator's intention) had made mello's death seems 'trivial'... i know and agree that in no way that mello's character is of more or of equal weight to L's... but the way that it was shown in this chapter would make any one, not just mello fans, think that it's a great injustice to such an interesting character...
the last picture of we see of mello being alive was him not in his smexy leather pants and vest but silly truckie disquise... with cap and all hiding his (smexy) face (we were granted only one small side way pic of his face before this)... sending off takada's personal items (to near?)... and then he's dead - the next time we see him, is just a small sideway pic of a slouched back... then the sad picture, just a quarter of a page... just quick image of mello's death shown during takada's phone conversation with raito... and that's all...
i sincerely hope that i'm wrong about near's reaction... and that there will be great deal of mentioning of mello's death later... i would be very upset if they just leave mello's death like that...
i also can't help but think that this series might end soon... unless they are going to start a new story arc... but that could be worst than ending it...
