OR obeservation day #3

-Causcasian female, early 80's,Obeserved a Right Femoral Hernia W/ Mesh operation, it looks just like this plastic 3M mesh things in the hospital with purposes that have escaped me during the past , but now i know what one of its uses are for.

-Caucasian male , in his 50's morbidly obese. Psychologically afraid of needles, felt "pain" and was screaming after anesthetics were already appied. He came in for a gastric bypass surgery which was my first observation of such a surgery, anyway, the surgeons shaved his hairy stomach and cut down the middle, and through his dermis, learned about Lactate Ringers which prevent fluid loss as they closely resemble the plasma in our body, (Mg and K) , learned about Irrigation (sodium chloride) , i saw white bands tied to his stomach and a bunch of great equipment on the table, there was this microscopic knife that heats up and burns and cut at the same time, his skin sizzle and i smelled "burnt" burnt skin i assume? His bowels were outside his body and jiggling about, i actually was pretty much desensitived at this point, since i always haven't been an afraid of blood or bad car accident crushed face, type of person. It's just the smell of blood and spurts of blood that fly out when an artery is cut since they dont teach you about that in class... anyway they sew him up pretty well, when the patient came to his senses he was moaning and crying out in pain ,even he was hemped up on the morphine sulfate.

-African Female, in her 50's, Came in for colostomy, more approriately a Hartmann's procedure. They found a piece of the colon that was rock solid, and they had to cut it out and pull the ileum outside of the body through the left abdomen ,and tied it to a pouch which i assume collected the feces. Her stomach was also a first for me being that it was stapled rather than stitched , another sign that they will need to operate on her again.

-Lobectomy- walked in on a patient who had to come back to the OR for the 3rd time, didn't stay long for that one.

My day started 6:45 and ended at 4:30. I myself woke up at 5:20 in the morning. I still love it thought =)
