Introducing Umlaut-Atheism (or Ätheism)

1. Mitchell's Background
1.1. I've always wanted a new symbol for atheism (ever since my inception of the a_toon community). I've always wanted to make atheism sound friendlier. If I wanted to scare people away from me when I explained my beliefs to them, I'd probably call myself a Satanist (referring to Levay Satanism, of course). I don't like ( Read more... )

You're a nut! But I think what you're saying is cute and of merit and I hope it catches on. That is a distinctions most people don't see. I was a soft atheist myself back in the day, but I did enjoy bating people into arguments about it.

I think I prefer fruit to nut. :)

Since this is in the convert_me community, heh, may I ask what brought about the change?

I got lonely and needed someone to talk to. It actually feels like someone's talking back to me too. I have no argument to support my belief in God now other than a pragmatic one. When I pray and propiciate what I call God, my life is better. All of the good reasons for not believing are still there, but happiness is preferable to having a well-formed argument sometimes. Pig satisfied I guess.

Couldn't help myself, I made an extremely basic one. I think I made it too curvy to compensate for lack of graphic art skills :)

I like it. It's immediately recognizable, and (to me at least) the curviness lends itself to images of the secular humanist stickman.

Also, it's good to see someone championing the distinction. I've tried a few times, in posts I don't feel like digging up, to point out that atheism is not a positive assertion. Usually I'm met with people looking at me like I have something growing out of my forehead.

I like how when you look at it one way, it's just an A, but if you look at it another way you can really see the smiley face. :)

I wonder if colors would make it better or worse... never thought of that before... should the swoosh be one color and smiley another? If so, we'd have to make up more bullshit reasons for doing so first... (i'll have to get back to you on that).

Great work!

Ha, I'm glad you like!

I wondered about colors, even background colors and such....maybe a green to match your other icons. I'm heading out of state for a few weeks...drop me an email if you'd like me to make more variations of it when I get back :)

Or, someone else can make a better one :D

Thanks!

My first thought was that you were going to describe "Ätheism" as a kind of "heavy metal atheism."

'Cause, you know, there's all those heavy metal groups that use umlauts in their names.

Okay, I'll go away now...

That's a really neat idea! Maybe we could errect the symbol in a public place and atheists could get together and worship it and . . .
