CITIZENSHIP 101: MISTAKES TO AVOID
IT'S A BAD IDEA TO SLANDER THE QUEEN:
Name: Agnes Young and Dorothe Frenche
Brought in: committed “at the commaundment of Sr Willm Chester Alderman”
Charge: “that the same Agnes and Dorothe lewdely & in naughty maner used lewde communicacon as touchyng the Quenes highnes[,] beyng bothe poore people and of thospital of S Thomas”
Outcome: because both were “poor and lame they were here ponysshed & so commytted agayn unto the sayd S Thomas hospitall" (How merciful!)

IT'S A WORSE IDEA TO STEAL THE QUEEN'S MONEY:
Accused’s Name: Richard Adyson
Occupation: servant
Employer’s Name: Thomas Gore [or Sore?]
Employer’s Occupation: merchant
Brought in: sent in by Mr. Chamb[er]layne Alderman
Charge: “that he practised and p[re]tended to ronne awaye w[ith] the quenes money[,] whiche his m[aste]r was charged to gether to the some of eighte hundrethe fyftie & iiii li. yf he mighte have played his purpose[,] and boughte a horse & unlawfull apparell to accomplishe the same w[ith]all"
Outcome: on 11 July, he was corrected by the officers at the pillory with rods with the same unlawful apparel hanged about him. Discharged on 25 July 1561. (Think his master was happy to have him back?)

AND TWO ENTRIES FROM THE ANNALS OF 'WHAT THEY WERE DOING BEFORE THEY GOT FAMOUS':
BEFORE HE BECAME PRESIDENT OF VICE IN THE WHITEHOUSE:
Name: Agnes Clerke als Nan Bradshawe
Occupation: “a common Rogar”
Charge: that she was a charter member in a band of thieves
Outcome: “beyng here examyned [she] doth confesse that she knowith one Dicke Foster & Dicke Cheyney & Margaret Androwes w[hich] arre common cuttepurses and do daily frequente to the company of one Barrett beyng one of the Garde at the Signe of the Son and vii starres w[ith]out Smythfelde barres & to the house of one Dickonson ageynst the Crossed [Croffed?] Freres. And that Henry Lodge and Thom[as] Baskerfeld arre also common pickepurses and do haunte the house of one Ramson in Seco Lane. And further that Lucas and Humfrey Cleme[nt?]es be common Bribers & theves and they do frequente the house of one Sayntury in Seco Lane. And further she affirmeth that Richard Hayes is a common thefe & doth use to robbe in the highway. And that Thom[as]Getley dwelling w[ith] one Danby a baker at Holborne bridge conducte [conduit] is a common piker & a thefe.”

Domicile: the Sarasyns Hed w[ith]out Newgate
Outcome: delivered at the sute of two sureties on condition that he appear when called, either before the governors of Bridewell or before Mr. Martin shirife of London
Surety: @ £20 each: Anthony Gervys, a shoemaker dwelling in the parish of S. Mary Som[er]set; Willm Browne, a “gray tanyer” in the parish of S Botolphes w[ith]out Algate {Bolton subscribed his name; two marks represent Gervys and Browne}
Date: 7 August
Other Persons Named: Mr. Martin, sheriff of London; Anthony Gervys, shoemaker in parish of S. Mary Somerset; Willm Browne, a gray tanner in the parish of S. Botolphe w/out Algate
