Summary: An offer and an acceptance
Donna looked out of the window. Beyond whatever passed for glass on this alien vessel was the blue-green curve of the Earth, bright against the black of space. She could see the moon, half in shadow, and stars spread across eternity. It was beautiful, humbling, and filled her with an incredible desire to see more.
She turned and looked at Bialar. He was not the Doctor, but she could see the shadows that haunted his eyes, recognised a soul that had witnessed more darkness than one had any right to. He needed someone, and she needed him.
“Take me with you.” The words tumbled out on a rush and he looked slightly startled.
“Where?”
“Anywhere,” she said. “If your people haven’t come out this far, then there must be more worlds to find, civilisations to discover.” Donna could feel the excitement bubbling within her. “Don’t you want to go and see?”
One corner of his mouth twitched upwards, the smile reluctant. “It could be dangerous,” he said, his tone a warning.
“Oh yes, more than likely, but that’s where the running comes in.”
She grinned at him, almost bouncing on her toes. His eyebrows lifted and he shook his head ruefully.
“What about your family?”
What about them? Donna felt a brief flicker of guilt at what she was contemplating. She loved her mum, and she’d been so much better these last few months, and there was her granddad but…
“I can’t live my life for other people,” she whispered. “I can remember that year with the Doctor, and I remember my life before that. I can’t go back to that. Not again. Not unless you wipe my mind.”
Bialar’s expression darkened. “I would not do that,” he said, his voice stiff and somewhat angry. He stared at her intensely. “I would never do that.”
His earnest promise brought unexpected tears to Donna’s eyes and she looked away, rather overcome. She took a couple of deep breaths to settle her emotions. “Good,” she said huskily. She swallowed hard and sniffed, folding her arms and giving him a level look. “But you’d still send me home?”
“Donna…” He sighed heavily and spread his hands. “Talyn is a spaceship. He cannot travel in time. If you went with me… then if you ever wanted to go home, if I took you back, there would be all that time lost and-”
“I won’t,” she interrupted. “I won’t want to go back.”
“You cannot be certain of that.”
She smiled at him. “Oh yes I can. I have seen what it’s like out there, Bialar. I’ve seen how terrible it is, but how incredible it is as well.”
He frowned and lifted one hand to his mouth, nibbling on his thumb in an oddly uncertain gesture that made her smile wider.
“Please,” she whined, dragging the word out entreatingly, which got her a look and a roll of his eyes.
“I think you are insane,” he said.
“Is that a ‘yes’?”
“That’s a yes.”
Donna let out a rather undignified squeal and rushed to him, throwing her arms around his neck with enough enthusiasm that he stumbled slightly. She felt his hands settle on her hips, warm and strong and hmm that was rather nice. His expression was shocked and bewildered, she thought that it made him look quite cute.
“Alright, I get the idea! I gather that you are pleased.” His voice was strained and she chuckled at him. “You can let go now.”
But despite his protest, Donna did note that his hands lingered on her hips as she unwound her arms. She smirked at him and just to unsettle him further she planted a quick kiss on his cheek. His eyes went very round.
“Thank you,” she murmured and then stepped away.
In the past she had been rather clingy where men were concerned, something that she realised now was not an attractive quality. It was not a mistake she was going to make again. So she turned, all cool poise and control, though her hips might have swayed a little more than usual as she walked away.
She glanced back at the door and saw his eyes on her rear before he snapped them up to her face. Biting back laughter, she ducked through the door and walked to the galley humming happily to herself. Not only had she gotten exactly what she wanted, but travelling through space had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.
