http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megami_Ibunroku_Devil_Survivor#Playable_charactersSince the wiki doesn’t mention it, his parents are both employed in Silicon Valley, and they are the source of his knowledge of/interest in computers.
Personality: Atsuro is an otaku, and he is not ashamed. Ever since grade school, he’s spent most of his time on the internet, making friends far older than him on programming and computer forums. He’s not a shut-in, and has a few real life friends, not to mention the internet friends he’s met in person, but anyone whose attitude towards computers is less than progressive would describe his behavior as a little excessive, considering the watch with USB cable he wears, the end of which he keeps clipped to his jacket. What it actually does, no one knows.
Regardless of his somewhat unusual habits, he’s a pleasant person to be around. He’s got a good sense of humor if you don’t mind being poked fun at a bit, and his computer knowledge is interesting and helpful if that’s your kind of thing. Between his adult friends on the internet and the events of the lockdown, he’s capable of a lot more maturity than you’d expect.
The lockdown was obviously a strain on Atsuro, mentally, physically, and emotionally, but it helped him to grow, even if the growth was much faster than he would have liked. At one point, he remarks that he’s annoyed by the other teens in the lockdown who sit around laughing and doing nothing, but also expresses his worry that if they hadn’t been given the ability to summon demons, they’d be doing the exact same thing. While he tends to think a lot about things, he generally keeps the heavier questions to himself, trying not to bring the people around him down with unnecessary introspection.
Atsuro is very loyal to the people he trusts. Once he’s built a close relationship with someone, it takes something really big to change his opinion on that person. In Naoya’s path (which hasn’t occurred but is still relevant to the character), where the protagonist chooses to become the king of demons, Atsuro is the only one of his friends who goes along with him, making sure his friend knows that while he’s not sure they’re doing the right thing, he trusts in him.
When faced with the dilemma of what to do with the demons, Atsuro came up with the unique solution of bringing the demons under their control, analyzing Naoya’s encrypted notes to find a way to do it. Naoya remarks that it’s the kind of solution he’d expect from Atsuro, showing that he’s very clever and not afraid to find unique ways of working around problems, turning a seemingly hopeless situation to his advantage.
Strengths: Atsuro’s greatest strength is his knowledge of computers and programming. It’s only through his ability that the protagonist’s group manages to unlock the demon summoning program in the first place, and his knowledge factors into solving puzzles such as 10BIT’s password; while he wasn’t the one to figure out that 10BIT in number form was the password, he was the one who knew to count beginning at 0 instead of 1, making their guess a success.
Despite being a bit of an otaku, he’s in fairly good shape, having good strength and vitality stats compared to most other characters in the game. As well, he keeps a fairly cool head in a crisis, making plenty of jokes to keep the party’s spirits up and generally not panicking. He’s mostly considerate, especially towards girls, mentioning that it wouldn’t be chivalrous to talk about the possibility that the lockdown can’t be escaped in front of Yuzu.
Weaknesses: Unfortunately, he’s not always considerate. While he’s never mean-spirited, his jokes can go too far if he’s not careful. He started calling Yuzu “Yoohoo” as a joke, and as a result, all the boys and half the teachers in school seem to think that it’s her actual name. As well, his joking can be somewhat insensitive when he gets into it too much, potentially embarrassing or hurting someone. He’ll apologize if he genuinely hurts someone, but that doesn’t magically make everything better.
He’s a little awkward when it comes to people he admires; his otaku tendencies come out, and it borders a little on hero worship. He blindly trusts Naoya for the first few days despite him being the most suspicious person ever, he sticks up for Keisuke even when he’s obviously not the same person Atsuro knew in middle school, and he asks for his best friend’s advice on nearly every course of action, following him on whatever course he chooses even though he personally wants to attempt controlling the demons.
Atsuro is an internet addict. With good friends around, he can last a little while without it, but any longer, and he’ll definitely start to whine about it. The internet is where he spends all his free time, and without it, he’s bound to be bored and worried about his internet friends.
