General
Canon Source: xxxHolic
Canon Format: Manga, Chapter 175-185
Character's Name: Himawari Kunogi
Character's Age: Turned 18 at the end of November
What form will your character's NV take? Uncreative like, her NV will take on the form of a simple white, blue and yellow cell phone. There is a phone sized screen on the top of it and a QWERTY keyboard that slides out at the bottom. In the back when slide out is a small screen that folds out for holo recording. Text, video, voice and such can be done on this as well. Hanging from the phone from the top was a phone strap decorated in sun flowers with a little yellow bird charm. Also a small blue, black and gray ‘frog’ looking charm that she had back from the island. Simple, portable, small enough to put in a pocket or strap around her wrist.
Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Himawari really has no super human abilities or anything fantastic to list. She can’t fly or leap buildings and really isn’t even a fighter at all, but her bad luck could be considered an ability. She tends to have a life long case of Bad Luck that affects those she makes connections to. So far only four beings have been unaffected by her Bad Luck. That would be her mother, father, Doumeki, and her pet bird, Tanpopo that her good friend Watanuki hatched specially for her.
She has never taken any martial arts courses or anything like that for fear of harming someone unfairly in competition or training, though, while she couldn’t do that so well, she’s a good runner on the track and in good physical condition. She’s fairly good with traditional dance styles as well though she’s not practices in ages. She’s rather smart though she appears and plays a ditz fairly well; she’s just not as dimwitted as she might appear. Problem solving can at times be simple but she tends to help by dropping hints and letting others solve the issues while she cheers them on from the side lines.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? While she does have some bad luck curse on her, I would like the world to have changed it just a bit. I’d like to put a slow growing ‘control’ over her bad luck. Something that she can learn as she grows up here. At first the normal habits of her bad luck will be here, but as time goes I want her to find that she can control the bad luck. Ultimately in the end I would like her to be able to give her bad luck to those she wishes to do so with.
With that said I would also like to note that this new talent doesn’t come with out some issues. Where she might be able to ‘restrain’ the bad luck, meaning she can interact more like a normal human, but also ‘give’ it to others. Only… when she gives it to others it will come back on her personally for the first time. In example: She gives a person a very brief case of bad luck, a trip over their own feet ‘I lost my wallet’ kind of bad luck. Later she will suffer that sort of bad luck only a bit worse. If she gives someone extreme bad luck, it could return to her ten fold and possibly kill her in the end. Think of it in terms of Bad Karma. You wish someone ‘bad’ and you get it back times 10.
With this kind of restriction I feel it might be interesting to see how she handles it. She’ll slowly get over her worries of harming others for one, but now she will have restrictions on how often she uses her powers. If she’s hurt by her own power it will keep her from just… giving bad luck to anyone for anything, thus keeping her from being over powered.
Weapons: Because I am taking her from another game and she has been taking lesions from two good friends on it, I would like to ask that a sword that was gifted to her and something she has learned to carry around with her all the time to keep herself defended while running alone come with her. Her sword and a short bow set that another good friend gave her. From where I am pulling her, she would have the sword on her person anyhow, and I would like the bow set to come with her as well. Other then these she has no weapons on her really.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: The term born under a bad sign should really have been placed on the baby Himawari so long ago. She seems, for no reason at all, to be 'blessed' with really bad luck. Something that only her mother, father and now Doumeki and Tanpopo seem to be unaffected by. Because of her ridiculous bad luck, things have happened to people around her all over. People she is connected to end up hurt in mysterious or simple ways just by knowing her. The people next door, after she picked up a ball from their yard, experienced a massive fire of their home. And even after her grandmother took her to a priest at a young age, to be checked, even after being told it's an incurable case of bad luck, the old woman passed on. Himawari knows that she was old and ill, but still it seems to fall under her curse of bad luck none the less.
While attending Cross Private School she tried very hard to keep away from people. But this one adorable bespectacled young man kept wiggling his way in and befriending her. There were others too, girls of her class and the archer as well, but she always tried her best to stay distant. Because of this distance she might have come off as standoffish or even snobbish to some people, though she was very friendly. Through the fact that Doumeki-kun does not seem to be affected by her bad luck, she has been able to become 'friends' with Watanuki. Always inviting or being invited to do things with the boy, she makes sure that Doumeki will be around as well, to keep Watanuki-kun safe. Nine times out of ten though she leaves the boys to go about something alone.
She's gotten better about that though. After the incident with Watanuki-kun’s fall she helped pay the price of his recovery, though she asked that her payment was held secret. Only Yuuko, Doumeki and Mokona know that as payment for her wish to help Watanuki she took the scars from his fall. She'd rather keep it that way too.
With a gift of Tanpopo from Watanuki she has gained one more being that is immune to her bad luck, meaning that she isn't so alone anymore. It's been very nice to have the little golden bird as a companion always nested there at her side. As of late she has grown more accustomed to having a few friends and likes to keep in contact with them. Still careful about these things, she will be friendly to your face, but in her heart attempt to be distant from everyone. She will speak kindly and be out going, but still never really grow close to people. It's just set in her history like that.
Point in Canon: Taken from the last possible moment in the series I could take her, she last saw Watanuki at school, giving him her first try at cookies and saying they were for Doumeki as well.
Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history:
salkia_island is an island RPG where a 13 year old fan fiction writer has taken control of the lives of characters. Himawari was pulled from home about 6 months ago and put on this island with out knowing why. While on the island she has had to grow up a bit more seeing as she doesn’t have her mother or father to watch over her anymore. Fighting home sickness and trying to stay away from people for a while, she tried very hard to learn the Island, so she knew how best to keep friends and others safe.
While here she met three people from home, Doumeki, Watanuki and Kohane. In the last few months of being here her friendship with Doumeki has grown the most out of everyone’s, having gotten closer to him then she was before. She has come to think of him as her closest and best friend and worries a lot about him. She actually worries a lot about most of her new and old friends here, and she has made a few new friends.
For being far away from home in some unexplained setting or world, away from her parents and loved ones, Himawari feels she’s been doing alright for herself, for the most part. She’s made friends in a few people other then those she knows.
While on the island she has found vampires are indeed real and very different from place to place. One thing seems for sure though; her blood affects them with her bad luck. If bitten or if her blood is put into their blood stream they will get extremely bad luck until it works out of their system. Otherwise she was never too harmed and never too attacked in any one event or another. She made friends with vampires and never really had to worry about them hurting her.
Salkia Island has monsters on it though, in the forests, and you have o cut though patches of forest to get to the lake and beaches. Every morning she had taken to jogging around the small city of Salkia, running from her home or apartment, down the way to the forest, and going where ever her feet took her that morning. Some times she’d run to the lake and around it, other times she’d run to the beach and down it. Most of the time she would run around the outskirts of the city, near the forest, just to let her mind wander and to think things over. None of which was exactly the best idea, seeing that the monsters tended to come out into the park, or lived in the forest and such.
Needing a way to defend herself, she wanted to learn some form of defense or weaponry, like so many other people around had. Doumeki had thankfully started to teach her to use a bow, which he found she was a natural with. Her bad luck to others seemed to also be a good luck in her archery. He got her a small bow to train on and they practiced, not only in the recreational center but also in the woods. On her first try, with some form of luck for herself and bad luck for the monster, she pegged it. Sadly they were attacked by another monster before too long, and so their training didn’t last too long.
Mean while, in between times with that she had ran into another boy (who’s name, once she comes to Sirens Pull will have escaped her, sadly) who, although he was a bit of a grumpy guy, seemed willing to teach a young girl to use a sword. She refused, too worried to harm him with her curse, but once he learned of it, he was twice as determined. He got wooden swords to help ease her fears, which it did, and helped train her out in the forest. She hadn’t had so much fun in a very long time, laughing, goofing off with the training but being serious about it too. She impressed him with her curious questions on technique, asking advanced things that even he had never thought about.
With both of her friends teaching her one form of weaponry or another she had gotten better at defending herself. Although while on a run once she had been attacked by a monster, not used to carrying a weapon with her at all at that point. It cut a gash in her right hip, a scar which she will still have to this day. After that she took to running with the wooden sword on her back, not leaving the house with out it unless she knew she would be safe.
This boy she found to be someone she could so easily open up to, which was odd, she thought, but it felt very nice. Even he seemed to open up to her. Though many talks and trainings with swords she slowly realized she had a crush on him. A crush was not safe, not at all, especially not when he was in love with someone else. She started to distance herself once again, though still friendly with him. His troubles seemed larger then anything she could handle to help with, and she feared that if she did interfear that her bad luck would curse him. Wanting nothing but the best, she had stepped back from checking on him as often and stayed as just casual friends.
Still closest to Doumeki out of everyone, she hangs out with him and Watanuki the most, or just… hides with them. She has found comfort in simply sitting in the same room as Doumeki, both reading books, not even talking about anything. To curl up with a book by her best friend is one of the few comforts she has left that remind her of home. Her homesickness on missing her parents crops up once in a while, making her withdraw more, but someone is always there to pull her out again. Watanuki, Doumeki, Tanpopo even does his best to keep her happy.
In the latest events on the island a mutual friend of theirs was hurt by a vampire lady. This upset her as well as Doumeki, and one day while chatting, a moment of horrible bitter thoughts cropped up. She thought of a bad plan that she shared with Doumeki, to use a bit of her blood and give I to this woman. The plan between the two friends was done, but not with out great costs. Doumeki was badly hurt in all of the mess that came much later. So badly hurt and changed. Himawari felt a great pit of guilt wash over her for this, offering to watch over Doumeki, but never really keeping perfect eye contact with him. Ashamed and worried that her idea like this had gotten him hurt. If he didn’t need to be so close to the woman he wouldn’t have been hurt.
She tries to watch over him as often as she can, doing what she can to help, and she’s keeping a smile on her face as she tries, but she feels bad. She felt even worse when he disappeared form the island again. Both he and Watanuki left, gone from the island, like the island does from time to time. It had happened twice with Watanuki but never Doumeki. She cried, worried about what happened to him. When he returned though he was much older (21) and… different, as was Watanuki (though not ‘older’). To her Watanuki’s eyes had softened and became calmer, where Doumeki’s had sharpened, grown darker. She was happy to have them back though, even if they were older and she was not.
She will be out running when she feels the pull taking her away from one island to another. Her sword on her back and her routine jog for the day, she will be out running when it takes her, sending her to yet another new place.
Character Personality: Himawari is a cheerful girl with a pleasant attitude which she often cheers her friends on strongly with. She seems to always be smiling, always curious of her friends and what they are doing, and generally a chipper happy young girl. On the outside, to strangers, Himawari seems to have a good and happy life for her to be smiling that well. In reality, her life has been full of bad luck for most everyone around her but a select few. It’s not a curse or anything but simply how she is. Her mother and father as well as Doumeki and her pet bird Tanpopo are so far the only people immune to her bad luck, making for a fairly lonely life. None the less she smiles.
It’s been said that the price to take her bad luck away from her and release her of this burden is far too high and would leave her with no happiness at all. She’s lived her life as a no luck girl, a barer of bad fortune to anyone she connected to, for so long, that she learned to manage and work with it and accept being alone. Smiling is how she faces the world because otherwise it might be too sad and she could never keep on moving. Smiling and being cheerful is the smart thing to do.
When confronted with something dangerous, Himawari isn’t the type to scream and run, nor is she the type to waver or cry or do anything too overly impulsive. Weird things have happened to her through out her life so she’s well adjusted to odd things that might happen. Nothing is overly shocking, though this isn’t to say she can’t be shocked, surprised or scared. She can, but she isn’t the type to run crying from trouble. Danger has to be handled properly or someone could be hurt.
On people she tends to be a bit standoffish and yet… not. To explain, she tries not to make too many connections with people because she doesn’t want those people to be hurt over her bad luck. She talks and is friendly to people, but she tries not to get close. In example to her series, Watanuki clearly has a hard crush on her, and she seems to be obvious to this. In reality she knows he has a crush and finds it flattering, but she refuses to let herself acknowledge this for fear that it might hurt the boy. When one day Watanuki fell from a window after she touched his shoulder, she took the blame in on herself for having given him bad luck. Considering him such a very good and close friend, she spoke to him, after paying a part of the price to keep him alive (scars all across the back of her body) and told him what she was. A simple human who brings bad luck to anyone she makes connections with. She said good bye, still smiling the entire time and planned to leave, so he wouldn’t be harmed again.
She’s very good at sacrificing things she wants or loves so not to hurt others. Prevention, too, is something she is skilled at. As in doing things that will prevent making too big of a connection so as not to hurt others. She tries though, to make friends with others but she tends to keep her distance even then. On occasions, Watanuki has asked to walk Himawari home, just to spend time with her but a majority of the time she always invites Doumeki along with them, claiming that the boys are such good friends and have such a grand ‘comedy act’ but really she worries about something happening to the young man if she's alone with him.
Conditional: Personality development in previous game: At Salkia island she has grown in a bit of confidence, still fighting to keep her smile on her face though, a mask. She met many people who also wear masks to hide their true emotions and feelings, which might be why she tended to get along so well with those people.
Still friendly and caring, she greeted many or offered comments to peoples questions form time to time, but still tried not to get close to people. There were a few however that she did get closer to, having grown in the fact that some people will just accept who she is and she has to accept that.
Character Plans: I’m bringing her in from another game with two others appers and hope they will continue to build a tight friendship over the course of time. I’m looking forward to having her interact with new people and exploring the process of her learning about being able to control her Bad Luck. I’d like to play out her first incident with controlling her bad luck and it brings HER bad luck some time as well. Trial and error kind of thoughts here. I’d love for her to start to get closer to people because of her being able to open up more, only to backfire something, or have them harmed because of her some how. As for a job, I’ve been playing with a few ideas, from as simple as a theater ticket taker and pop corn sweeper to possibly someone getting wind of her Bad Luck talent and conning/poking/prodding/black mailing her into working at the Underground Casino at a card table, passing out tainted bad luck cards and making players lose while they are there. Possibly a waitress.
Appearance/PB: Please look at the icons in her journal for what I will be using for her. I am using mostly manga and anime images of her from the xxxHolic series. There is no need for a PB otherwise.
She has very long dark black curly hair that she either wears in two pig tails or just drawn back in one thick pony tail at her back. When she is pulled from Salkia Island she will be dressed in a simple work out attire, swearing long gray sweat pants with pink and white pin strip down either side, good running shoes and white socks. Her shirt is a simple lose neck turtle neck in light pink with a gray hooded sweater (small pink flowers on the pockets and over the heart) over top. A sword strapped to her back at the time and a small satchel holding a few things hanging over the same shoulder and arm.
