Title: An Anniversary
Authoress: Alex Janes (delusionalrose)
Fandom: Sports Night
Pairing: Very, very slight Dan/Casey
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own Sports Night, that's Aaron Sorkin's territory, I'm just playing around in it. The song 'Wonderful Tonight' was, I believe, originally made by Eric Clapton.
Written for the Contre La Montre 100th challenge in roughly 37 minutes. Song lyric from 'Wonderful Tonight' by Eric Clapton.

"Do you know what today is?" Dan asked when Casey walked into the living room.

Casey yawned, shaking his head and weaving his way over to the kitchen. "Why are you in my living room at-" he glanced at the clock- "ten in the morning? We don't have to be at work for another hour and a half." Apparently Dan wanted to unnerve him, throwing off his morning routine so he was still half-asleep at work. He threw Dan a sleepy glare as he tried to find the orange juice in the fridge.

"That's not important," Dan said, shaking his head. "Do you know what today is?"

"Ummm..." Casey looked around for the calendar. "It's some day in early March?"

Dan shook his head again. "Casey, Casey, Casey. It's March 3rd." He smiled, as if that cleared everything up. Casey raised an eyebrow.

"Thank you for the date, now, can I have my breakfast?"

Dan sighed. "Casey. Today is March 3rd." Casey was beginning to feel like a toddler. "Today is our one hundredth show together!" He grinned.

"Oh." He should've known. Dan was always big on little anniversaries like this- he pouted all day when Casey refused to acknowledge their one-month anniversary. "I knew that, I just... forgot."

Dan looked disappointed. "Oh. Okay. Well... I'll just... go get breakfast or something. I'll... I'll see you at work." He nearly tripped over himself on his way out, and Casey was left with the vague feeling he should've asked him to stay for breakfast.

"Before we wrap up this broadcast, I'd like to announce that this is a special day for my partner and I," Casey said into the camera. He was aware of Dan's looking up suddenly from his papers, and settling quickly onto an on-air, I-know-what-he's-doing smile. "For nearly four months now you've been tuning in every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get the news from our show, and this is our one hundredth show. While it may not seem like much to you, it means and lot to Dan and I, so I'd like to present my partner with a special present."

Dan forgot all on-air rules and turned fully to look at Casey, who fumbled in his pocket for the box he had gotten between rundowns earlier. He handed it to Dan with a small flourish.

"Happy one hundredth, Danny," he announced softly as Dan took it and opened it, running his eyes over the antique pocket watch- the kind he'd always said he wanted to own. He watched his partner open it, listening to the soft ticking, and watched the small smile that spread across Dan's face as he read the inscription on the inside of the cover- One hundred shows strong.

Dan opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out, and Casey chuckled silently as Dan cleared his throat and got ahold of himself. "Thank you, Casey." He looked up, catching Casey's eye, and repeated softly, "Thanks." After a moment, he turned towards the cameras, ending the show as usual, and Casey knew everything was going to be fine.

"I can't go home to Lisa like this," Casey announced- his first rational thought since the show ended and everyone went to get drunk.

Dan nodded in understanding and held the cab door open for him.

It was a silent, but not tense, ride to Dan's place, and the two fell immediately into Dan's bed, but not to sleep. Casey cracked one eye open, and Dan was staring at the ceiling stiffly. He shifted closer and put his head on Dan's shoulder.

"Casey, what-"

"Shhh," Casey ordered, before covering Dan's lips with his own for a few heart-stopping moments.

"What was that for?" Dan asked when he pulled away, a small smile playing on his lip.

"Because, my darling," Casey muttered, his words thick with alcohol and sleep, "you were wonderful tonight."

He grabbed Danny's hand, and drifted off to sleep.
