New challenge.

Here's a challenge to chew on whilst sipping your champagne and ringing in the new year; non-song songfic. A songfic is a piece of fiction preceded by or interspersed with lyrics from a song. This week, write a fic that uses lyrics in the dialogue or narration, but in such a way that the original musical nature of the line isn't obvious. For example, I've chosen these lyrics from the Backstreet Boys' Shape of My Heart (a very popular songfic choice):

Sadness is beautiful
Loneliness is tragical
So help me I can't win this war
Oh no
Touch me now don't bother
If every second it makes me weaker
You can save me from the man I've become

And this is what I've done with them:

"Your sadness is beautiful, Legolas," Aragorn said as he brushed back a wayward strand of mellifluous gold from the Elf's opaline face. "And my loneliness is tragical in these dark times. I may be a fighter, but so help me, I can't win this war in my heart! Help me!"

Legolas's liquid sapphire eyes brimmed with the crystalline juices of his devotion to the mortal man. "Oh no, my love," he whispered. "Do not beg for my help. Nay, touch me now, don't bother with sweet words!"

Aragorn sighed with relief as he cupped the elf's slender chin. "All this time I've spent loving you in silence has been such a burden, sweet prince. If every second it makes me weaker, you can save me from the man I've become."

Then the Man explored the shape of the Elf's heart all night long, and two times in the morning. The end.

Your fic can be cheesy, serious, or anything else. The challenge here is to take lyrics out of their original context and build a story around them. You have 1 1/2 hours, so take your time, take out your CD's, and have fun!
