“Aoi!” Even if he wasn’t talking to me all of a sudden, I still found myself in his bed one night. Something was in the room, and I didn’t know what it was; it wasn’t showing itself like the doppelganger had, and it wasn’t being very nice. It touched me, and I knew it wasn’t Aoi because I was turned toward him while he slept soundly on his bed. I found it funny how a ghost slept, which was strange because Aoi was usually awake, or when he did sleep he would sit up and look at me. I wasn’t thinking straight, and I’m not going to pretend as if I was. Ever since Aoi mentioned his doppelganger being after me, I was paranoid because I didn’t know when it would show up or what it even wanted from me. As soon as I felt that touch my eyes shot open and a million thoughts went swimming through my head as to what it could be.
“Wake up.” I whined as I buried by face against his shoulder. My fingers were clawing at his loose hospital shirt, and I could feel my chest tighten from the fear. Of all the times for Aoi to be asleep, he had to pick that particular night. I felt like such a baby for being so afraid and clinging to him, but I was so sure there was something else in that room with us. I was terrified of the paranormal, yet I was clinging to a ghost and seeking comfort from him. “Aoi~”
Aoi stirred, trying to roll onto his side. Through the darkness I could see his eyebrows knitted together in confusion before his eyes opened and he sighed. He knew something was in that room, and he wasn’t prepared to do anything about it just yet.
“There's something in here.” I whispered in answer to his unasked question. “I could feel it, Aoi. What is it? “ He sat up with one of his arms wrapped around my shoulders almost as if he were trying to protect me from whatever was there. I felt more comfortable and safe now that he was awake. Aoi was supposed to protect me from whatever was there right? Nothing could actually hurt me now that he was awake, but he had also said nothing could hurt me anyways. That wasn’t exactly true.
“It could be him.” He spoke softly. He looked toward my bed and tilted his head much like he always did. “But then again it could be someone else. This is a hospital, y’know; it could be anyone. These places are filled with thousands of spirits. Some are silent, and some want attention.” Aoi turned to look at me and frowned. “I’m sorry I went to sleep.”
“Why is he after me? What did I do?” My voice was shaky. The idea that something was after me wasn’t very comforting even if Aoi was awake and there to save me.
“I’ll tell you in the morning.” Aoi laid back down beside me and pulled me closer. “Go back to sleep, and I’ll make sure nothing else touches you.”
Nodding slowly and letting my eyes roam over the room one last time, I closed my eyes and snuggled closer to Aoi’s body.
---
Morning came and Aoi never said a word to me. Hitomi came in to check on me like she was supposed to, and the whole time she was smiling. If she noticed anything strange between me and Aoi --whether it was the fear, or the fact he was being protective of me-- she didn’t say a word. My thoughts kept lingering back to the previous night instead of the questions she was asking. I couldn’t concentrate on her at the moment.
“Uruha, I need you to sit up straight so I can listen to your heart.” Her voice sounded tired and impatient, which was strange because she always had patience when it came to me. My eyes snapped up and met with hers, but she just sighed and raised an eyebrow. “Sit up, Uruha.”
“Don’t be so rude.” Aoi snapped quickly, suddenly sitting beside me on my bed. “He had a rough night.”
“Well I’m sorry, but I just want to get my work done today. You don’t know how many calls I got last night because some of the other patients were out of control.” Hitomi breathed in and let it out slowly. I took pity on her and sat up straight like she had asked.
“What do you mean?” Aoi asked while he watched Hitomi reach for her stethoscope and brought up the end to my chest. They were silent while she listened, and then she was pulling away.
“Takahisa-san had woken up and yelled for a doctor.” She put her hand on her hip and sighed. “He’s usually so quiet, so the doctor went in there as soon as he could. Takahisa-san said he heard something by his ear, and that’s when he woke up fully. Later that night I was called in to check on some of the other patients who claimed to hear and see things.”
“Maybe there was something in there.” Aoi shrugged. “Something was in here last night, and it touched Uruha. Maybe there are more than one ghost here that’s haunting people.”
“It could be a possibility, but wouldn’t we know?” Hitomi raised both of her eyebrows, “If they came from the other side, we would know of them and their location.”
“Unless they never passed over.” Aoi shrugged. “If they never passed over that means their souls can’t be detected on the other side, which also means we wouldn’t know where they are.”
“I suppose you’re right.” Hitomi pursed her lips before she was reaching for the back of my shirt. “Uruha, I need you to breathe in real deep and let it out for me, okay?”
“Okay.” I nodded as she pulled my shirt up, but I never felt the end of the stethoscope against my back. I looked over at her, then Aoi, then back at Hitomi before one of them finally said something.
“Uruha, does your back hurt?” Hitomi leaned down so she was looking me dead in the eye. I shook my head because my back felt perfectly fine like it did any other time. “Are you sure?”
“When you said something touched you,” Aoi’s hand was placed on my thigh and he was looking at me as if something was completely wrong. “what kind of touch was it?”
“It just felt like a hand on my arm.” I felt the hand on me, but it was only on my arm. It was like someone had clasped their hand over my shoulder. I never felt anything touch my back.
“That doesn’t make any sense.” Hitomi stepped back and crossed her arms over her chest. “Aoi, you didn’t see anything?”
“I was sleep.” Aoi shook his head. “Uruha, did you feel anything else or see anything?” I shook my head and looked back and forth between the two. They were starting to scare me because they weren’t saying what they had seen.
“Why are you asking me so many questions?” They looked at each other and Aoi nodded toward Hitomi, and she nodded back, then he nodded again, and she nodded. I grew fed up with their little disagreement. “Tell me!”
Aoi sighed and pulled my shirt back down. I was looking at him and waiting for him to say something, but he was silent and biting his lip. I knew him enough to know he was trying to word his sentence in a way that wouldn’t freak me out even more.
“So you felt someone touch you on the arm, which doesn’t explain the hand print on your back. You didn’t see anyone, so I have no way of knowing if it was my doppelganger or not that did this to you.” Aoi was clearly still thinking because his eyes were unfocused. “But if my hand matches up to the hand on your back, that means it had to be my doppelganger.”
“But your doppelganger has never shown up and hid itself. A doppelganger usually isn’t invisible, unless it’s the ghost who forms into your doppelganger. If he’s not in your form, he may be here all the time. He could even be here now.” Hitomi was looking around, but it was pointless because she wouldn’t be able to see whatever was in there if it really was there.
“That just means I have to stay by his side all the time.”
---
“Aoi?” Uruha looked to his side quickly and kept his voice down. He was sitting in the play room with all the other kids, but this time he was alone. There was no Massu coloring in a coloring book, and no Sakito and Akiya talking a mile a minute. They were sitting across the room in their usual corner while Uruha sat opposite of them.
The ghost boy looked over at the mention of his name and smiled softly. “Yeah?” He rested his head on his friend’s shoulder, waiting for Uruha to speak once more.
“Can you tell me now?” Uruha asked feeling strangely comfortable with Aoi so close. “Why he’s after me?” The little boy hesitated slightly when asking the question because he wasn’t sure if Aoi was willing to answer or not. Uruha had learned that certain things made Aoi mad, and certain things he didn’t want to talk about, but Uruha needed to know the answer.
“He’s mad at me, and taking it out on you.” Aoi wrapped his arms around his friend and moved closer. It wasn’t fair that his doppelganger was doing this because he was mad at him. It wasn’t his fault he had such an attachment to Uruha; it wasn’t his fault Uruha was so important to him that he couldn’t leave him alone.
“Why would he be mad?” Uruha raised an eyebrow. He couldn’t think of any reason for this doppelganger to be mad at Aoi. Beside him Aoi sat up, and Uruha almost pulled him back, but didn’t because they weren’t in the privacy of their room.
“Because.” Aoi turned to the side and shrugged. “I never leave you alone. I’m always with you, and I just recently decided to show myself to you. I’ve always been there like I told you.”
“But that doesn’t explain anything!” Uruha hissed. He wanted his answers. He was tired of Aoi dancing around the reason his doppelganger was there in that hospital, and why it was after him.
“It’s because I like you!” Aoi yelled, slamming his fist down on the concrete ground. “It’s not just that! There’s just something about you my doppelganger doesn’t like. There’s no reason for it that I know of, but he hates you. He doesn’t want you to be here, or anywhere. I like you too much to let him actually do anything, and that's why he's so mad at me. I like the person he hates. He can’t hurt you with just his own hands, but he can move things and hurt you like that. He doesn't have the ability to materialize like Hitomi and Miyako, or even me. He stays in ghost form.”
Uruha blushed softly and suddenly began giggling. His hands flew up to his mouth and his eyes closed as his giggles increased. “Aoi,” The little boy took a deep breath and tried to stop himself from laughing. “In a creepy way, that’s kind of cute.”
“Cute?!” Aoi yelled again. “You think it’s cute that I like you and my doppelganger wants you dead?”
“No, it’s cute that you like me and you’re a ghost.” Uruha giggled again. “People can’t be with ghosts~”
“Don’t remind me.” Aoi pouted. It didn’t matter to Aoi that they were kids because eventually Uruha would grow up, and Aoi would change his form so he was just as old. He could wait for Uruha to grow up as long he was still able to be to be by his side.
“Don’t look so sad.” Uruha cooed, “If it makes you feel any better, I think you’re really cute and pretty.” The little boy nodded with a large smile. "You're really, really, cute Aoi-chan."
“That makes me feel so much better.” Aoi spoke sarcastically, “But that doesn’t fix anything. He’s still after you.”
“I’m not too worried.” Uruha shrugged and stood up from his spot on the floor. It was time to go to his room for the day, and he was glad because he could interact with Aoi more. “I have you to protect me, and maybe one day I can return the favor.”
