Chapter: 14/?
Synopsis: Neither one, Kouyou or Yuu really remembered them, but Shinji and Naoyuki still kept an eye on them when they had nothing else to do. Kouyou had lost his fairies when he turned ten because he no longer needed his magical fairies to help him. In other words, he had gotten too old and they had to be assigned to another child. The most they could do for Kouyou was watch him from afar and use limited magic to help him, but only in situations when he was in danger. He wasn’t in danger too often --at least not since Takashi’s memory was erased so he didn’t remember how he managed to break his arm, and Kouyou had no idea either.
“Kouyou.” The little boy in question turned around with a sheepish laugh. He was five and carefree. There were no parents in sight even though he knew both of them and his older sisters were somewhere in the house. It was his chance to do whatever he wanted because there was no one to stop him, or so he thought.
Mrs. Takashima had just finished making a batch of cookies and left them to cool on the cookie sheet when she left the room. Kouyou didn’t care what she was doing or where she had gone because he already had his target in sight: the cookies. He had spent his entire day begging his mother for the cookie dough and just one cookie, but she kept shaking her head and telling him to go play while she baked.
Kouyou wanted a cookie.
Kouyou needed a cookie.
Because if Kouyou didn’t get one, he would have a fit.
“I just want one.” He held up one little finger to indicate how much he wanted while the other hand brushed his black bangs out of his face. In front of him stood a chubby man with a raised eyebrow; the same chubby man he couldn’t get anything pass.
“Didn’t Mommy tell you to go play and not eat the cookies?” The man leaned down with his hands on his hips. Kouyou pursed his lips and glared at the man. No one was supposed to keep him from what he wanted, darn it.
“I just want one!” Kouyou squealed, stomping on the man’s foot causing the man to whimper. “I wish I had a cookie!” The little boy squealed, his hands clutched into fists at his side.
“No.” Naoyuki shook his head and pointed his finger in Kouyou’s face. “If I just use magic to get you a cookie, you’ll never learn to listen to your mother. You’re supposed to listen to, and respect, your elders Kouyou. Now, go play like Mommy said or I’ll cut off your wishes for a week.”
The little boy pouted angrily. All he wanted was one teeny-tiny cookie. Naoyuki was just being a meanie. Naoyuki was so unlike Shinji. While Naoyuki was strict and mature, Shinji was careless and stupid. A smirk began to make its way to the little boy’s face when Naoyuki grabbed him by the arm and gave him a pointed look.
“And don’t you even think about going to Shinji.” The fairy grinned. “I took his wand before I came down here because I knew you would try to run off to him. Just remember Kouyou, I’m always a step ahead of you.”
That was how Kouyou learned to listen to his mother, although sometimes he chose to temporarily forget. Without Naoyuki constantly keeping an eye on him, Kouyou never would have learned to respect his mother and do as he was told.

“You’re home.” Shin rolled his eyes at his father’s words. Of course he was home. Where else would he go? His father was seated on his recliner in the living room with a new paper in his hands. It was obvious he was just waiting for his son to finally come home after a day because Shin could tell his father hadn’t actually read the paper; it was upside down anyways. Chances were he had grabbed it when he heard a car door slam outside.
“And where were you?”
“Where do you think I was?” The teenager took his shoes off before he decided to make his way into the kitchen for something to drink. He really didn’t feel like talking to either one of his parents, and he was lucky he hadn’t run into his mother yet. His father could be difficult, but his mother was a real pain in the ass when she wanted to be. Seeing as he had left without coming back for an entire day, Shin was going to go ahead and assume he was in a lot of trouble.
“You better not have been with that Yutaka kid.” His father’s voice floated through the air. Where else would he have been? Shin didn’t trust any of his other friends enough to stay with them. Yutaka was the only one he felt comfortable enough around to stay with. At least with Yutaka Shin was sure he wasn’t going to be the center of some stupid joke like he was when he stayed the night with Akira to do a science experiment. That was the worst night of his life.
“Well I guess you can just get pissed off at me because that’s where I was.” Shin grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and made his way to the living room again. His father wasn’t going to let him go to his room so easily, Shin knew that. It was best to just sit in the living room and listen to the lecture he knew was coming. “Besides, you can’t be too mad when you let me explain a few things.”
“Shin, I thought we said-” Shin held up his hand as he took a drink of his water. Sometimes his father didn’t let him finish his thought before he was yelling about something.
“I wasn’t done talking, Dad.” He rolled his eyes. “I may have been with Yutaka, but I got to thinking. I know, it’s shocking.”
Well, if there was a time to bring up Kai it was before his parents decided to completely ruin his life. The last thing he wanted was to spend his night listening to his parents yell at him.
“Go on.” His father folded up the news paper and sat it down on the end table next to him.
“I might have maybe sorta kinda met someone else.” Shin scratched the back of his head. He and Yutaka never actually went over how he was supposed to tell his parents about Kai. “While Yutaka was helping his mother make dinner, I decided to go online to talk to some of my friends. I do that all the time, right? Anyways, I had a new friend request from this really pretty girl. I mean she’s really pretty. I’ll have to show her to you later, if you want. She was online at the time, so I thought I’d get to know her because I don’t really like strangers too much.”
“I thought you were gay.” His father raised his eyebrow and crossed one leg over the other.
“Bisexual.” Shin almost cringed at the word. “So anyways, she seems like a really nice girl. We even talked about my relationship with Yutaka. I guess she was right when she said he wasn’t good for me. She said something about him being the clingy type, or something like that.” that was the exact thing Kai had said to make Shin slap Yutaka upside his head because Yutaka wasn’t clingy at all. If anything Shin was the clingy one. “She told me it was a bad idea for me to be with him because eventually I’d get sick of him always hanging around. I didn’t realize it until I actually thought. Yutaka and I do spend a lot of time together, and sometimes I do want time to myself…”
“And you’re going to listen to some girl? Your mother and I have been telling you to get rid of him for awhile now.”
“Dad, no teenager willingly listens to their parents!” Shin stood up and began pacing around the room. “Anyways, I thinking about giving her a chance, y’know? I’ve only ever been with Yutaka, and maybe it’s time I got out and had a real relationship that I can be public about. Yutaka and I have to pretend we’re just friends when we’re out. It’s so annoying because we’re not friends, we’re boyfriends. I don’t expect you to understand that. I just wish I could go out and let people know I’m in a relationship.”
“So you’re telling me,” The older man stood up to grab his son by the shoulders, “that you’re willing to let Yutaka go just to be with a girl you just met not too long ago? Are you sick or something because you threw a fit when-”
“Teenagers don’t listen to their parents.“ Shin cut in. “If you want to move back to Saitama, I’ll go pack my things. There’s nothing here for me now besides a few friends.”
“I’ll talk to your mother. You get upstairs and get to bed. It’s late and your mother won’t be happy when she finds out you came home at this hour.”
Shin nodded and made his way up to his room with a triumphant smile on his face. His father had fallen for it a lot easier than he had thought. All he had to do was hope his father would make it just as believable when Shin’s mother was informed of his newfound love.
---
“Mommy, look what I can do!” Kouyou squealed loudly from the slide. His mother was seated on a red bench under a tree ten feet away. It was a bright summer day and Kouyou was playing at the park. Usually he didn’t ask his mother to take him out because she was busy being a housewife, but it was too nice out for him to just sit around the house or play in the backyard. He wanted to go to the park and play on the curly slide and swing on the tire swing.
Mrs. Takashima gave him a smile as he sat down on the slide. It was such a big slide for someone as small as he was. Kouyou would have been lying if he said he wasn’t afraid to go down, but he was a big boy now and big boys slid down slides all by themselves. His mom would be so proud of him, he was sure.
“Are you watching, Mommy?” He smiled as wide as he possibly could. Kouyou was just stalling because he was afraid. What if he went too fast and flew off the slide and broke his arm? Kouyou didn’t like pain. He was really starting to have second thoughts about the slide even if his mother was nodding from the bench.
“Kouyou~” He almost jumped at the voice behind him. It was a little boy with black hair and oddly enough, a lip ring, was standing behind him with a smile.. “You don’t have to be afraid to go down the slide. If you want, I’ll even go down with you!”
“…Shinji?” Kouyou looked the boy up and down before he turned around with a shrug.
“Duh.” Shinji sat himself down next to his godchild and grabbed his hand. “There’s nothing scary about a curly slide. You go round and round and then BAM! You’re at the end. There’s nothing scary about that. Come on, I’m with you and you know I wouldn’t let anything happen to you. Besides, I heard the ice cream man’s truck a few seconds ago and I really want some ice cream, and I’m sure you do too. The sooner we slide the sooner we can get ice cream.”
Kouyou nodded enthusiastically. He loved ice cream, and if Shinji was with him he didn’t feel so scared. Shinji never let anything bad happen to Kouyou. The grip on his hand increased just a little bit when Shinji looked at him with a smile.
“Ready?” Kouyou nodded as he and Shinji used their free hands to push themselves down the slide. He giggled as the wind blew through his hair and he went around the first curve. It wasn’t so scary now that he had Shinji with him. Shinji held his hand the whole time, giggling and smiling until they reached the end where their feet met the ground.
“See, I told you. It wasn’t that scary.” Shinji released the little boy’s hand so he could stand up.
“…I… WANT TO GO AGAIN!” Kouyou yelled, already running around the slide to climb the stairs back up to the top.
That day, Kouyou learned to face his fears. Even if he was afraid to do something, he could always count on his godparent to be by his side so nothing was ever that scary.
---
“Did they buy it?” Yutaka was brushing his teeth when Shin decided he wanted to call. He didn’t mind because he never cared when Shin called. It was other people calling that made him mad. It was hard to talk with toothpaste in his mouth, and it was even more hard to rinse his mouth out while Shin was talking on the other end.
“Dad did. I haven’t said anything to Mom, but Dad said he’d talk to her.” He could hear the excitement in Shin’s voice. “If she believes it, there may be a chance she won’t even want to move to Saitama. Think about it: if I’m not in love with you anymore, I won’t want you, right? If I date Kai, I won’t be interested in you. Do you think I could get Midori to go on a fake date with me? It would be a lot more convincing if I introduced her to my parents. I don’t think we thought that part out…”
Yutaka laughed softly as he turned on the water to wash out his mouth. “I’d be so jealous if she agreed, but I’ll just have to get over it huh? I’ll ask her tomorrow if she’d consider it when the time comes.”
“How pissed do you think Kouyou would get if he found out we were pretty much using his sister?” Shin giggled.
“Ever watch a really gory horror movie?”
“Yeah.”
“That is how you would die if he found out.” Yutaka wiped his mouth off and put his toothbrush back before walking out of the bathroom. “As long as we keep our mouths shut he won’t suspect a thing.”
“Noted.”
“Don’t slip up either.”
“I won’t if you won’t.” He could tell Shin was rolling his eyes. “Anyways, I better let you go so you can sleep. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, yeah?”
“You always do.” Yutaka smiled, closing his bedroom door before making his way to his bed. “By the way, you left your jacket on my bed. I suspect you’ll be back for it?”
“Maybe I left it for a reason.”
“What reason would that be?”
“Oh, so you can spend your night clinging to it and crying after I break your little heart. I can almost picture it now. Please don’t get too many tears on it. It might take away my scent and replace it with the smell of your tears. It won’t be much of a comfort if that happens.”
“I’ll try not to cry too much.” Yutaka rolled his eyes, picking the jacket up and placing it on the pillow next to his. “You should sleep, so I’ll let you go. You and I both know we won’t hang up for another two hours if we keep this up.”
“You’re right.” Shin laughed, shuffling beneath his own blankets. “So I guess I’ll see you later… And even though I have to dump you, I love you.”
“Even though I think you’re totally mean for ditching me for a girl, I love you too.”
---
The next morning, Shin woke up to knocking on his bedroom door. No one ever knocked on his door at nine in the morning because intelligent people would know better than to wake him up. The knocking didn’t stop when he angrily told whoever it was to go away. It was too early to be talking to anyone, and he’d be damned if he was going to get out of bed.
“What part of ‘go away’ don’t you understand?!” He yelled from beneath his blankets. Holy shit, it was his day off and he still couldn’t sleep in. What the fuck was wrong with people?
The knocking only increased and then there was a laugh that made Shin crawl deeper into his blankets.
“Go away, now.” He was getting angry now, but not because it was early. No, he was angry because of who was behind the door.
The only thing Shin wanted to know was ‘why?’. Why was it his life that was always so messed up? What had he done to piss off the higher powers?
“But, Shin honey, if I go away now we’ll never get to go on our first date!” Shin sprang up from the bed, red in the face from the pure rage pulsing through his body.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” He demanded as Kazuki skipped into his room, shutting the door softly with a grin. Shin didn’t like this at all. It wasn’t enough that Kazuki was in his house, in his room, but he was now mentioning a date?
“Ah, I see you haven’t spoken to your mother, huh?” Kazuki plopped himself down on the bed as if it were normal of him to do so. “She called me this morning. She told me you’re interested in some girl, huh? Imagine that.” He drew out the last two words with a roll of the eyes and a smirk.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Shin scooted away from the other boy, but Kazuki caught his arm and forced him down, pinning him to the bed with his own body.
“How stupid do you think we are?” Kazuki was inches from his face as he spoke, “There is no girl. It’s just some plot you and Yutaka came up with. You would never leave him for someone else, let alone a girl who lives in Tokyo of all places. If you were to go back to Saitama, you would use that as an excuse to see this girl, but you’d really be going to see Yutaka. I know everything, Shin. I know about Kai, the profile, the fact she’s really Kouyou’s sister, and the fact Yutaka is Kai.”
Shin’s eyes widened, his hands struggling against Kazuki’s hold. How did he know? He and Yutaka had been so careful about everything. Yutaka made sure it wouldn’t be easy for people to pick apart their plan, yet Kazuki knew everything.
“How do you know all that?”
Kazuki giggled, nuzzling his face in Shin’s neck affectionately. “I’ve been keeping an eye on you. Wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you and Yutaka, now would we?”
“You’ve been stalking us?” It really wasn’t that surprising, but how did he not notice it? Wouldn’t he have felt Kazuki’s eyes on him? Wouldn’t Yutaka have noticed since he seemed to know everything? “Wait… why did my mom call you?”
Kazuki started laughing again, muffling his laughter against Shin’s shirt the best he could until he could calm himself down. It was working out perfectly so far. “Well, I came over here the other day to see if you were home. I had this big epic plan to make you miserable. God, it would have been the greatest thing I could have ever done, but then your mother told me all about your situation. Y’know, you’re mad because you have to leave because they don’t like your relationship with another man… but then I got to thinking… What would make your even more miserable than what I was already planning to do?”
The taller boy pushed himself into a lying position next to the other. His index finger was tracing Shin’s jaw line with a lack of interest as he spoke. “Sure I’m another man, but there’s something about me your mother just adores. I’ve yet to figure that out, actually. I’ve been lying to her for as long as she’s known me.”
Shin slapped the finger on his jaw and glared. “You didn’t!”
“Oh, I did.” Kazuki laughed, “You’re not to be with Yutaka anymore. You’re mine now, Shin. If you want to stay in Tokyo with all your friends and Yutaka, you have to break up with him because either way you’re mine. I already agreed to visit Saitama every day if I have to. I’m a charming boyfriend, y’know. Think of it this way: it’s beneficial to me in numerous ways because I can do whatever I want to do and get away with it and I can make sure you don’t ruin my reputation by telling everyone the truth about me.”
“You’re such a bastard, Kazuki.” Shin stood from the bed, making his way to the door, “I’m not breaking up with Yutaka for you. There’s nothing you can say to change that. My parents will just have to accept my relationship or believe in Kai.”
“Oh, about that.” Kazuki sat up with a grin, “I told them all about her. Don’t be surprised if your dad kicks your ass. He really hates it when you lie to him about such things. Anyways, I must be going. Unlike you, I have things of importance to do. But don’t worry, honey, I’ll be back tonight to see you. Good boyfriends check on their lovers.”
“You’ve never been a good boyfriend to anyone.” Shin spat as Kazuki stood in front of him, cupping his face in his hands. He almost wanted to vomit as Kazuki leaned in and kissed him. His kisses were nothing like Yutaka’s. Kazuki was rough about it. Yutaka was never rough unless he knew Shin was into it at the moment.
“I wouldn’t say that. You should ask my past lovers just how great I am. But don’t you worry. I’ll show you.” Kazuki had his hand on the doorknob, the grin still on his face as he blew a kiss toward the other boy. “And remember ‘I love you, Shin’. Of course, that’s what I would say if I actually liked you. So watch your back, honey.”
The door closed and Kazuki was gone. “God damn it.” Shin cursed, punching the wall next to him. Why did everything have to go wrong for him?
---
There were two kids and one lollipop. Man, did Kouyou want that lollipop something fierce. It wasn’t just any lollipop, it was one of those huge multicolored lollipops that would take him at least two days to eat. He could picture himself eating it now, his gums watering at the mental image. That thing was his.
“I want it!” Kouyou shook his head. Even if he totally loved the other little boy, Kouyou was not that in love with. Sure, Yuu was cute and practically a mini god, but Kouyou already decided the lollipop was his. Yuu could just deal with it.
“No! I want it!” He made the angriest facial expression he could muster up.
“No! I’ll tell Mrs. Murakami you’re not being a very nice person, Crazy Kouyou~.” The other little boy stuck his tongue like a brat. He didn’t like Kouyou one bit, and he wasn’t going to let him have the last lollipop.
“I WANT IT!” Kouyou yelled, slamming his hands down on the desk, leaning forward into Yuu’s face with a glare. “Akira’s mommy brought it for me you big moron!”
“Akira’s mommy brought them for the WHOLE CLASS!!” Yuu yelled back, his nose touching Kouyou’s.
“Psst~” The sound of Shinji and Naoyuki’s voices was present in Kouyou’s head. He hated when they did that because he never knew if he should talk back or not. If he did he would just look like he was a big crazy or something, and that wasn’t going to help him make friends. But then again, arguing over a delectable piece of candy wasn’t going to do the trick either.
“Maybe,” Shinji suggested, “you should share it.”
“Yeah,” Naoyuki cut in, “You lick one side and he can lick the other.”
“Eww, but wouldn’t their tongues meet in the end. Haven’t you ever heard about cooties?”
“Shut up, Shinji. This is why I do all the talking.”
“No, you do all the talking because you never shut up.”
“That’s not true!”
“SHUT UP!” Kouyou yelled, causing Yuu to back up with wide eyes.
“But I didn’t say anything!” Yuu blinked in confusion.
“Not you, stupid. My fairies! They’re yelling in my head.” Kouyou pointed to his head with a look that said ‘duh, where else would they be, you idiot?’
“…You really are crazy, aren’t you?”
“NO!” Kouyou pouted, “I thought you wanted the lollipop. Why aren’t you arguing with me?”
“Because you’re crazy. Mommy always told me crazy people were bad~” Yuu backed away, “Y’know because they like to kidnap cute little kids like me and do bad things to them. I saw it on TV once when I was with my brother. Some of the things I saw were not pretty… kinda like you.”
“Do you want to share the lollipop with me or can I take it somewhere you aren’t?” Kouyou deadpanned.
“Depends, can you wait a second for me to get my cootie shot from Yutaka, or would you eat the whole thing while I’m gone?”
“I DON’T HAVE COOTIES!” Kouyou squealed.
That was the day Kouyou learned to share with others even if he really didn’t want to. It was nice to share with others because that’s what polite people did. Unfortunately, Yuu ended up taking the lollipop in the end, so Kouyou’s newfound ability to share was a waste of his time.
“Naoyuki, I think I remember.” Kouyou looked at the fairy lying on the floor with his Gundam action figures. He had been on the floor reenacting episodes of the show out of boredom, or at least that’s what Kouyou had thought when he heard Nao yell “GUDAM! MOVE!!” like he was actually in the Gundam himself.
“Really?!” Naoyuki turned his head quickly to look at his former godchild. “You think you remember enough to get rid of Isshi?”
“I think I do.” Kouyou nodded with a smile. “Leave it all to me. I’ll get rid of Isshi for good… but in return I demand you two make me the supreme ruler of Fairy Land and I would also like a lollipop.”
“Can I have one too?” Yuu smiled hopefully.
“No. You’re a big moron who doesn’t know how to share with people who are obviously prettier than you therefore, you are not worthy of a lollipop. Maybe next time you’re in kindergarten you’ll make better decisions.”
“Oh my god.” Yuu face palmed himself. “You’re still mad about that?! I was five!”
“Five. Seventeen. What’s the difference?” Kouyou shrugged. “Anyways, supreme ruler, Shinji. Remember that. I’m counting on you to make it happen.”
“If you make that boy the supreme ruler, I swear I will have your balls.” Naoyuki threatened the fairy who was simply sitting across the room silently.
“But… but..” Shinji looked around in confusion. “What did I do?”
A/N: Just a few notes:
1. All of the italicized flashbacks range from the time Kouyou got his fairies to the time he began kindergarten.
2. Mrs. Murakami is the kindergarten teacher (who you'll meet in an upcoming oneshot).
I'm sorry if there were any errors. I've been very busy today, so I didn't have time to go through and look for everything. I'm extremely tired and sore today and my bones feel like they're on fire. I'm going to head to bed tonight, so I'll get back to comments in the morning.
