I just got back from a meeting with Judicial Services. MTS plead guilt to a chalking violation and received 70 hours of service for the Union. This is 5 hours per person in the troupe and the minimum punishment possible because the chalk was cleaned up not only by ourselves but by rain as well within 3 days. For those of you with a passing interest in economics, I'll give you an estimate of the cost of this punishment. Let's say that we value our time at $10 per hour, or that we'd give up an hour of our time to get $10. Well, assuming that we value all of our time at a constant $10 an hour makes the punishment equivalent to a $700 fine. But wait, that's the conservative estimate. I don't value each hour of my time equally. In fact, I have a sharply upward sloping supply of labor curve. Thus, I value I place on hours of time increases as I give up more and more important hours. Thus, we might say $700 is the lower bound estimate, because in fact, the average value of an hour that will be spent on this service will be higher, perhaps $15. This makes the total cost go to $1050. If you think that's all, well just wait. This is only true if I really only value my time at that amount. The market values my time at around $30 dollars an hour (this is the wage I would be paid for an hour of my time). So, I actually on average may value my time much more than the $15 dollars estimated above. Let's say $20 per hour is a likely estimate. So our fine is really costing us somewhere between $1050 and $1400. Terrific.
Oh, and lest you assume that these service projects will somehow benefit the campus or the group, I will tell you what our punishment is likely to entail. Painting the offices in the Union. How about that? Judicial Services in a joint venture with the Union has managed to extort from us over a thousand dollars for what could never be considered even $50 worth of damage to the campus.
You know what? The more I think about this, the more I wish I had appealed. Not that I have any faith that reason would have any effect on Judicial Services, but this fine is really amazingly high given the nature of the 'crime.'
This only seeks to drive me further into already skewed political ideologies.
