I am so fed up with the American people at large, and their ridiculous reasons for or against either of the candidates. I have the utmost respect for those who come up with an educated, well-researched opinion, regardless of who their ultimate choice is. I certainly don't expect everyone to have the political knowledge of a news anchor - I certainly don't. I don't know everything there is to know about every vote Obama or Biden has made throughout their careers, every speech given, every success or misstep. But I have done my research and know what I feel is necessary to make my choice. That is a FAR cry from some of the ludicrous things I have read or heard on the news, blogs, friends and family members.
A) John McCain is not a war-monger. If anyone understands the cost of a war, I should think it would be a man who lived as a POW for a number of years. With that said, yes, he has a different philosophy about how to handle the war in Iraq, and other potential conflicts which might arise during his presidency. And no, I am not comfortable with that policy, but that's no reason to run around saying John McCain loves war.
B) Barack Obama DOES salute the flag. He is NOT a Muslim. He DOES NOT have ties to middle-eastern terrorist groups. If he did, those would of course be very good reasons NOT to vote for the man. But that all stems from a nationwide game of "Telephone" played like 3 years olds across the country. What starts as "I am hungry" somehow turns into "I am evil and will kick the snot out of you on the playground." When you listen to a 10 second soundbite on the news, then repeat it all over the place to people who do the same, it is going to perpetuate mis-truths. So do yourself a favor, the next time you hear something that seems shockingly damaging about one of the Presidential candidates, spend 5 minutes looking it up. Where was that first reported? By whom? In what context?
There are already silly accusations being made about Joe Biden. I have no problem with attacks on the candidates' policies, but attacks on their character is absurd. You simply cannot find a single American who has never lied at least a little bit or made a poor personal or professional decision. Stop deciding you don't like someone because they "seem like a bad guy", and start looking at the issues that might make someone a bad PRESIDENT. Bad presidents can still be good people, and good Presidents can sometimes do bad things. You need not look farther than President Clinton for an example of the latter. When a Presidential candidate has literally stolen millions of dollars, lied in a manner with complete and utter disregard for the consequences or committed murder/rape/abuse or other atrocities of a similar nature, then you can talk to me about the character of the candidate as a legitimate factor in your decision.
Until then, for the love of God, read. Just a little. Your brain won't implode. I promise.
/end rant.
