Pill Bottle

I wrote this for my Creative Writing portfolio. Let me know what you think.

Pill Bottle

Katy’s hands shook as she dialed the numbers, quickly, quickly. She blinked back tears as she held the phone tightly to her ear.

“Hello, Mrs. Donovan. Is Lou-Ann there?” Katy managed, as she fought to keep her voice steady.

“Yes, dear. I’ll go get her.”

Katy hugged her knees to her chest and squeezed her eyes shut.

“Katy?” Lou-Ann’s sweet voice glided through the phone.

“Lou-Ann, thank god you picked up. You see I really need to talk. Billy he…”

“I can’t talk now.” Lou-Ann interrupted. “Jeff’s over. Jeff! Can you believe it?”

“Lou-Ann can’t you stay just a bit. I need…”

“I got to go. I’ll call you back later. Bye.”

Katy heard the click, but held onto the phone long after the call had ended. She finally hung up when a male voice started to say, “Sorry, but the number you have reached…” Defeated, Katy let herself cry.

It was late at night and Lou-Ann was curled into the sleeping bag besides Katy. The movie had just ended and the two girls laid in silence.

Suddenly, Katy asked, “Lou-Ann, do you ever feel like you don’t belong?”

Lou-Ann yawned. “Like how?”

Katy took a breath to steady herself. “Like you just woke up one day and realized that you’re completely different from everyone else. Like you will never find someone that completely understands you. Like you’re an alien and you just ended up here on accident.”

Lou-Ann looked puzzled. “ No, I’ve never felt like that.”

“Oh.” Silence.

“Hey, did you hear about Britney’s ex? I can’t believe he’s into drugs now…”

Katy stopped listening. She turned away from Lou-Ann feeling lonelier than she had ever felt by herself.

Katy met Lou-Ann after class. Her head ached, bad. The pain seemed to resound and echo in her head as if her head was a tin filled with coins, shaken by a toddler. Katy often had headaches, but they were seldom this painful. Lou-Ann was chattering on about something unimportant. Katy did not have the energy to concentrate on her words.

“Lou-Ann, do you have any Advil? I have horrible headache.”

“Sure.” Lou-Ann stopped and rummaged through her bag, finally emerging with the pain medicine. “Here,” she said, handing the bottle to Katy, “Take one if it hurts a little and two if it hurts a lot.”

Katy barely heard her. She took the bottle from her friend and emptied its contents into her hand. There was only one pill.
