Hey, 2013 still feels new to you too, right?
So, I've had a lot on my plate lately, with finishing up the old job, going to India for a beautiful wedding, and starting a new job. Although I definitely miss my old coworkers, the new job is so far so good, so that's excellent. Oh, and they gave me a nerf gun on my first day, which makes it EXTRA excellent. :)
But anyway, mostly I wanted to post about last year before I forgot it ever existed. So, without further preamble...
A little rougher than 2011; but on the whole, many good things.
New things:
- Gardening. Home grown tomatoes are tasty.
- Flying trapeze!
- Marvel. Yay playing a Santo game again.
Endings:
- An epic conclusion to Sanctuary, Mackie's D&D game, which I will miss
- Seven Virtues -- a great final year
- Monthly providence meetings
- The Wire. We finally finished it (after almost five years I think!)
Some highlights:
- First pennsic! Loved the workshops and the people
- Getting to be in Ann's wedding. The wedding itself was beautiful, and the reception dancing was really fun. (And hey, I gave a speech, woo.)
- Going to Alaska, after wanting to go for so many years. Camping with Ben&Dana, seeing bears and moose, glacier hiking!
- Biking on Block Island. Relaxing, great food, great company, great games.
- Anniversary trip to Nantucket Island. Less good biking, lots of rain, fondue, and the whaling museum
- Having a mardi gras party with all the requisite hijinks.
- Wine tasting in San Fransisco, seeing abandoned missile silos, having the best host!
- Going to Italy with D&L - amazing sights, delicious food, great travel companions
- Running several 10Ks, including one where people read James Joyce to us as we ran past, and one where we had a BBQ that afternoon. Whee!
- Keira's visit, with aquarium times and general awesomeness
- Jamey's cousin's wedding, with the friendliest jocks who made me feel old with their serious drinking and staying up late skillz
- Going to Southeast Asia -- ballooning over Bagan, one night in Bangkok, Ankor Wat
- The best 4th of July ever -- the adventure of downtown fireworks in the rain
- The hugging saint
- Hearth cooking take II: this time we brought the boxed wine, and it was summer
- Dave and Beth's beautiful wedding, with great dancing and important conversations
- Planting peppers in the garden
- Celebrating the summer solstice and equinox (yum, honey)
- Amy's Christmas eve-eve party on the winter solstice: great Michigan reunion for folks I wish I saw more often
- And finally, a fancy NYE dinner at Xeph's followed by a lovely party at Lo's with friends old and new was the perfect way to ring in the New Year
And what I'm sure you've all been waiting for: My list of best and worst media:
- Best TV series: The Wire. I think it might actually be the best tv series I've seen ever
- Best movie: Cabin in the Woods
- Close runner up: The Avengers
- Worst movie: Timecode
- Best musical: Catch me if you can (or possibly American Idiot; they are so different it's hard to compare but both were very good)
- Best new advice column: Dear Sugar, by Cheryl Strayed
- Best novel: Torch
- Best new game: Space Alert!
So yeah, I think that's it. Happy 2013! :)
