Happy New Year everyone!
I had a good Christmas break, despite the Expedia ticket stupidness. It was good to see family, even if it was too short, and it was great to spend some time in St. Louis.
I'm glad I made it both to Rob and to David & Hillary's for New Year's Eve. I've heard so many things about Rob's that I was glad to finally see it firsthand. I think the ice luge is an excellent invention, and that his house is a fantastic party space. The fondue at D&H's was so tasty, and it was good to see lots of folks I wouldn't have otherwise. The drive between was also enjoyable.
New Year's day was weird. We got up at three, had breakfast, and then it was dark.
But really what I wanted to post about was
There's only really one new thing for 2007, but it's been a good one:
- New job. I still love my new job. I like working in downtown Boston. I work with some very smart people who share my sense of humor (!). I've learned a lot, and am constantly encouraged to learn more. I don't just program, I also get to do a bit of design and a bit of data manipulation, which breaks things up. I have a ton of freedom. But mostly, it's that I love coding in java and I finally feel like a real developer.
- Oh, I lied. Another new thing is having 11 magazine subscriptions. I'm on the train a lot.
Highlights:
- Going to Cancun with Keira and Amy. Isla Mujeres cannot contain us!
- Running Second Dawn with Ben and Jamey
- Getting to see not one but TWO plays that my brother Rob was in. I'm really impressed with his acting, and I love watching him on stage (Candida and Dr. Seward's Dracula)
- Serin and Eric's wedding -- it really was beautiful
- Finding bridge partners
- Seeing my aunt in South Carolina. I'd never gotten to spend so much time with just her, and I'm glad I had the chance to.
- Visiting Baltimore!
Favorite (and least favorite) Media
- Best movie: Children of Men
- Worst movie: 300
- Best new series: The Kushiel series. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
- Best novel read to me: How sad - I don't think we even made it through one novel this year. We're still reading Dark Lord of Dirkhelm
- Best show: This is difficult, because I saw so many excellent shows. I think I'd actually have to give it to Assasins, which had appealing music and is about the six (seven?) would-be presidential assasins, which is just a great theme for a musical. Runner's up are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (best comedy), Mamma Mia (catchiest tunes) and The Fantastiks (most vaudeville)
- Worst show: Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fever. If you were planning on seeing an acrobatics show, this is OK. If you thought you were seeing a musical, RUN AWAY. There was only one singer, and didn't have a very good voice. Oh yeah, and she was dressed up like a ladybug, which didn't help.
- Best concert: The Onion Cellar (ok, it's more than a concert, it's like a concert plus a story, but it was excellent!)
- Best new games: Powergrid (multiplayer), Goa (two-player)
New Year's Resolution:
I usually don't bother, but this past Christmas vacation had me thinking on friends that I haven't kept in touch with as much as I wish. I'm resolved to do better this next year
