Maybe this makes no sense but...
I think people get pissed off when someone has it worse than them.
Sure, plenty of times this is because people feel bad for the less fortunate.
But on Livejournal, and in reality, I see a different view with more people than I'd like.
"My life sucks more than yours!"
If I said I was beaten, someone else would claim they were beaten harder. If I said I was raped, someone else would say they were raped more times. If I said I was poor, someone else would say they were poorer. If I said I was fat, someone else would say they were fatter. If I said I was sick, someone else would say they were sicker. If I said my jeans were blue, someone else would claim theirs were bluer. If I got knocked up, someone else would say they got knocked up with twins.
It's like when I was watching Will and Grace, and they play the "Diss The Daddy" game. She complains about her father to a woman, and the women replies that her father was incarcerated when she was four and they've only seen each other through glass. Grace was just bitching because her dad wasn't very affectionate.
My point is this: The odds that you have the worst haircut, family life, job, or random situation is VERY SLIM. Do not be jealous if others have it worse than you. Feel bad for them, try to help them for fucks sake. This whole contest of "Who's worse off" is stupid.
Example:
"Yeah, my brother sent my birthday card a week late, I was kind of bummed that he forgot."
"At least you got a card! My brother doesn't even remember my name!"
WRONG RESPONSE.
I realize it is good to emphasize. But it's often nicer to sympathize. I just can't stand this whole "My life is the worst" bickering I see. Sure, it is good to share in misery. Misery loves company. But let's not compete. Let's not say "You think THAT sucks? Listen to THIS" unless it is genuinely worse, and preferably amusing and unique.
Just my thoughts.
