(I was thinking of a way to explain and reasons often cited for certain behaviors and the ways in which this knowledge got lost.)
In ancient Rome, the illness of women was often attributed to women not following the rules society set for them: basically leaving your home, pursuing pleasure and improving yourself the way a man or the chosen one does or might
It was seen as positive judgement for positive "reasons" so it was seen as fact because it thought it could (falsely) construct a cure. Comparisons to the holy are and were made, in that sometimes God demands (or asks for) a higher calling for you, and that was a way to explain differences as in why the nurse or the nun didn't have to live like you were supposed to. Moreover, without such contradictions of how they behave, it was just seen as holy - something that means you are raised to a higher state. But this higher state isn't curing you or I. No, it's often only the cause of our problems.
So was rampant in older hospitals, like religiosity and "whatever god says goes". Nurses were more like nuns. After government observation and oversight, this became less so, and so people stated it was part of the downfall of society.
