This...was decidedly not what he'd been expecting to happen. One minute, he'd been in his own world, worn but relieved that his fight was finally over -- that he hadn't failed at the role Vash had requested that he fill -- only to find himself in an unfamiliar place where he was expected to fight for a cause he didn't believe in. At first, he hadn't believed it. It had seemed too fantastic to be true; honestly, it seemed even more so right now, considering who he was about to meet.

He shouldn't be this jumpy. He didn't look it, of course, but he felt it. How was he supposed to deal with this? The last time they'd seen each other, both of them were fighting for their lives. Even the time after the battle was over didn't really count. It had been so brief, and Livio had been exhausted. He'd fallen asleep, only to wake up and be told the only one who'd bothered to believe in him since he was a child was gone. Killed, by his own hand.

There was no way this couldn't be awkward. He managed to keep from fidgeting somehow, though, ( ... )

Wolfwood honestly didn't know what to expect outside the barracks. He had been here only for two days, and it was a weird two days for him, but having his childhood friend here of all places would likely top the list. It made about as much sense as being brought back from the dead. Thus, it was with a dubious heart that he went to the meeting ( ... )

... Well, that certainly wasn't the response he was expecting. Although the laughter was really sort of grating (especially considering where these articles had come from), in a way, it was better than awkward looks or some shit like that.

That didn't mean he couldn't be exasperated, though.

"Nice to see you, too."

It took several long guffaws before Wolfwood could finally regain a modicum of seriousness, but it was enough. The awkward status quo broke and the two were, at least temporarily, on a more comfortable level. Again, Wolfwood looked his childhood friend over, and this time he managed to retain his straight face.

"I see yer lookin' good."

Silence.

Perhaps that relief of broken ice short lived after all.

Before the silence could stretch on for too long, Wolfwood jerked a thumb to his right. "Let's get a drink. I think I can use one myself." They had a lot of talking to do. A lot.

Considering the fact that Wolfwood has just been laughing hysterically because of his cloak and hat, Livio was a little skeptical about the 'looking good' bit. It could also be taken as being in one piece, though, and he was that, despite all the close calls. So...a good thing.

Not quite as good as the prospect of a drink, though. He nodded once. "All right."

Wolfwood quirked up a half-hearted grin. But in the dim lighting of insufficient lighting and 'night mode' setting of this underground world, it might've came out as a depreciating smirk. Not that that wasn't too far from the truth. Wolfwood's been dead for only two-three days, but there were things he wanted to know.

Suddenly he was glad of the dark lighting that hooded the emotions in his eyes.

He led Livio around the barracks to the military bar near the side of the camp. It was not much more than a hole in the dump like the rest of Ex Favila, but he heard it served alcohol, and was told that it was free. Considering he had no currency on him, haros or double dollars, that was a major bonus.

The two of them found a corner table by the back, and it was with pure habits that made Wolfwood take a seat which allowed him to view the entrance. When they were served two large mugs of beer and a pitcher of the yellow stuff, he looked to Livio and lifted his mug.

"Ever drank before?"

It was hard to read Wolfwood's expression at that moment. Maybe it was because of the lighting, but really, Wolfwood was a hard person to read sometimes anyway. Not so much when he was angry, but at times like these-- well, shit.

He didn't say anything, just followed Wolfwood to a spot at the back. He noticed how Wolfwood positioned himself; honestly, if Wolfwood hadn't, Livio probably would have. Old habits and all that.

Still, he couldn't quite keep the dubious look (minor, though it was) off his face when they were served. And, of course, the relevant question: had he ever drunk before?

"Not really." By which he meant, not at all. "But I figured now was as good as any time to try it."

Because God only knew how long they were going to be here or what kind of shit they'd get into. Not to mention that fact that this would maybe, just maybe, make this conversation a little easier.

He took a sip and sputtered. "What is it?"

"No?" So Livio never drank alcohol before? Well, Wolfwood wasn't too surprised by that. The Eye of Micheal wasn't exactly your neighborhood bar, and Wolfwood wasn't sure if Livio had been sane enough through his training to sneak out like he did. "Then you're in fer a treat." He watched as Livio took the first sip, and laughed gleefully when he choked on it.

"It's beer... or wha' they pass as beer 'ere." Wolfwood grinned and took a hearty gulp of his own mug.

He promptly choked as well.

"Shit!" Okay, that was a lot worse than he expected, even for free beer. The gulp burned all the way down his throat and packed a strong kick into his stomach. It was hard stuff, which normally would be good, except it had additional flavorings to give it texture and taste like distilled tomas piss mixed in desert sand.

Wolfwood's drank worse, but this graded pretty high on that scale. "This..... is some shit." He looked at his mug somewhat dubiously and tentatively gave it another try. Maybe this was an acquired taste.
