War is still the same-- isn't it?
The claim could be questioned, in fact. Stranger in an unknown land, the idea of war holds many mysteries yet undiscovered by the freshly promoted general. In a sense, he is more than ready, eager even, to meet the men who will fight under his command. And yet, there is a sense of awkward unease, doubt. Will this time be any different than the last?
Sasarai, a general without men, is often restless at the end of the day. Feeling as if he could do more. Today is no different, quite the contrary. The constant rain has ceased for a moment, but the ground is damp, rich with earthy scents lingering in a passing breeze. Few months, that's all it has taken to get used to the idea that his shoulders will always be damp, the back of his trousers if he'll sit down for a moment, boots soaking through thick leather. It has become part of every day life.
He leans elbows on his knees, chin resting on a palm, the damp grass giving a touch of darkness to his uniform. He likes these few hours before curfew the best. It's calm, and yet not dead quiet, the base is still alive. It's familiar.
It's also familiar to wait the two men who form the whole third brigade at the moment. Maybe not quite a habit, but still expected by the bishop, evenings like these should be shared with company.
